That is explicitly why is it so perfect, though. It's so simplistic yet Cloud wields it with such purpose and fervor.
It's the kind of weapon you simply cannot be nonchalant about wielding. Even when Cloud's trying to look flippant and smug, with the sword resting on his shoulder, the simple silhouette of the weapon in his hands is intimidating.

Remember the heaviest usuable swords were 7.1 lbs (Zweihanders).
There was even a legend (story) about "Pier Gerlofs Donia" which used a 14.5 lbs Zweihander, which was basically impossible to be used by a human, reason why it's a legend.

Look for example to to "Brotherhood" (Tidus's) which it's rather pretty (the point could be better), one may say someone actually cared, but then you look at "Masamune" (Auron's celestial), and it's a mess, looks like a Pokemon's Mega Evolution, spikes everywhere that serve no purpose, and one may say it's design doesn't even remind a sword.
