Financially yes. Every time something goes for a wider demographic though, you notice it inevitably, ends up shittier and usually less popular than it would have been if the company had just done there thing in the first place.
Look at the new Warcraft movie for example, fucked it up horribly bad so that it could appeal to casuals, and thus it flopped because casuals can see it's clearly not for casuals, but hardcore faggots also clearly see it's not for them either. Dota 2 is objectively terrible unless you're above 3600 MMR, even then you have to deal with seriously emotional people.
You can actually be terrible at the game and win if you're good at diffusing conflicts on your team, and giving orders that will be followed by using lower-case letters and not directly referring to anyone specifically.
Sometimes you'll just lose because the other teams players are all in positions they want and characters they're strong with. It just takes one person to fuck up the lanes on your team and force people into roles and heroes they aren't comfortable with, and that will usually result in a loss.
