Yeah I've got Adventure mode 'unlocked'. I've been leveling through that but I haven't played in a very long time. Last thing I knew, you do five of the missions in one area then you get enough fragments to open a rift. I got none this time but I got two caches full with shitloads legendary plans and other wacky shit. Maybe it's a level cap-only thing.

You can get set pieces by doing season missions.
After you 1st set you can farm TX rifts for rift stones then do some great rifts for gear.

Just get follow your seasonal journey to get your free set then see where you shake out based on what else you've picked up. Getting your free set and immediately hitting T5+ is not uncommon depending on what class you are,

Also there are some guides out there that you can follow to blitz through to 70, I think it revolves around picking up a certain legendary that doubles the effects of a ruby in your helm and another set that doubles exp gain or something nuts like that. Both around level 20.

Different sets affect it more than your stats at first. Last season I played picking up 2 more pieces of a set (going from 2pc to 4pc) with the same stats let me go from T2 to T4 or 5 immediately. Find the set you want then worry more about stats, because you'll probably be dicking around in T1 or 2 until you get 2 or 4pc depending on class and set. This is progression in D3 now, at first at least.
