What happened? Why did the hype die?
I don't remember much hype besides 'lol naked witch!' The fact that this was the only thing they were pushing to sell the game made me weary. Well that and its a Star Ocean game. And the absolutely ugly character design and movement.
Honestly it looks like Suikoden V all over again. Low budget game trying to look like a high budget game.

They started the censorship before it even left Japan. Japan had a negative view of Square Enix ever since the merger, so when they debut new games in Japan, there is always a sense of hostility.
The two biggest Japanese RPG publishers merged, and have been making subpar JRPGs ever since.

SquareEnix always tries to get someone else to market their games for them. Nintendo for Dragon Quest, Sony for Final Fantasy, etc. Usually if they can't trick someone into marketing for them, they just don't market the game. Or do a really cheap job of marketing (like only online ads).

Japan as a whole takes a lot less marketing to make a game sell well. Considering sales of like 300k is good in Japan. A lot of companies try and have the same mentality when releasing a game in the west. But then expect the same game to sell 5x more in the west, even with no marketing.
You can't release a game in the west and expect it to sell without marketing. Japanese companies know this since they market the hell out of games like MGS, Sonic or Final Fantasy. But then magically become ignorant to all other series.

You can't skip cutscene dialogue. The only thing that's skippable are pre-rendered cutscenes, and there's very few of those.
It's 25-30 hour main story and 50-60 hour 6W EQ for your first playthrough if you go slow and take your time. Doing it in 20-25/35-40 isn't that unreasonable if you go at a quicker pace.
