Just tons and tons of artwork of their character in different poses, wearing different outfits (think generic stuff like cowboy or mailman or christmas or whatever) and doing different things expressly for their use in promotional materials and merchandise.
I seriously can't imagine how anyone can think they get like a team going to create new art instead of just making it in bulk and saving it whatever occasion.

Toad was legitimately my favorite character in elementary school- mostly a by-product of my brother always choosing Yoshi in Mario Kart so I stubbornly pretended that I wanted Toad anyway until it sort of became true. Mario always tread the line of inconsistency. Probably some of the game's most well known shitlords were created when Nintendio weren't afraid to be different (Yoshi, Bowser Jr, E Gadd)
Now they're trying to do some weird imitation of Super Mario World's artstyle (Which looked like shit by the way) for every game and while it gives consistency to Mario's world it's stifled the fuck out of Mario's spirit. Not to mention the obsession with just recycling everything.
