Do you want local co-op games? Those are unfortunately less common than they should be.
Jamestown is pretty fun. It's a shoot-em-up that starts out pretty easy. The four of you could probably have fun without much practice or familiarity with the genre.
Hammerwatch is a fantastic hack-and-slash game like Gauntlet, but it probably requires more time to really enjoy.
You could also go with the newest Gauntlet, if Hammerwatch's retro graphics aren't appreciated by your """nerd""" friends.
Serious Sam 3: BFE has split-screen co-op, but I never tried it. It's a first-person shooter so it's probably not going to be great with gamepads.
Magicka is a fun game for co-op, but it's bad to play with controllers, so I wouldn't recommend it for local co-op. And it's not so amazing that I'd tell you to go and buy four copies.
I'm sure I have a lot of other games with co-op but I never get to play them that way.
