I used it in my sixth item slot while fighting a missingno, and now I use it on everything.
I used my Red version Master Ball on a level 120 Mewtwo encountered via the Missingno glitch. Little kid me didn't think to duplicate it before using it.
In Silver I used it on a Quagsire that refused to be caught. I regretted it immediately.
In Ruby I used it on Groudon. I regretted it as soon as I encountered Latios.
I haven't used once since, even on roaming legends.

Don't use them. Save them for shinies which never actually show up.
Used it on a legendary bird as a kid, because remember having a nightmare capturing Mewtwo.
Shinies that can explode/run away/too weak to survive an attack. I usually catch legendaries/rare pokemon in pokeballs.
I only use standard Pokeballs.
