Everyone gives Heroes so much shit but It's by no margin worse than the adventure games. Not that it's great, but the adventure games are just as bad and they are heralded as great games for some odd reason. The only thing sonic heroes has different is that story mode requires multiple playthroughs that might get boring.

The entire reason that Sonic is a hedgehog is for the rolling, which leads into the keeping of momentum.
"PRESS X TO GO FAST RIGHT NOW" doesn't have as much meaning.
I've seen some halfassed fangame thrown together in Unreal Engine 4 that manages rolling and momentum with sonic in a 3d world. and it works better because like in non-boost games, momentum is earned.
Boost is speed handed to you on a platter, and when it handed to you on a platter, it doesn't feel as important. Even the spindash where you suddenly burst off from a stationary point is a matter of 'charging' momentum while stationary.
Bring on 3D, bring on a dozen old and new Original the Character friends, but for fuck's sake, keep rolling as a method for maintaining momentum, and don't hand out instant free momentum.
