Neither of them were required to beat the game or any of it's ultimate bosses. Zodiac spear and Durandal are pretty much collectibles, and some of the hidden ultimate weapons in IZJS were most likely unfinished or dev test weapons, meaning they weren't meant to be found.

Not him but yes. Everything is too homogenized in the vanilla version, where literally the only thing separating characters is their base stat growths. It essentially creates a situaiton that because everyone can do everything, there's literally no reason not to use Vaan/Ashe/Balthier since statwise they were just plain better than the other three and could perform all their jobs easier. The other three basically just existed for a fast nuking with Quickenings then back to reserve.
The job system if nothing else at allows you to tailor characters to best fit their stat growth and thus encourages using everyone (except Fran, because fuck Fran, she's bad at eveeything). If anything the biggest flaw is that the game has 12 classes but only 6 playable characters. Well what the fuck Square, I can't even see how those classes feel. Would it TRULY be such a terrible thing if you let me dual-class, or at least pick a second class on top of my original one in NG+?
