That red hallway is pretty much guaranteed to be one of the first areas after the ship. If you look at the stage concept art almost all of them are callbacks to old areas of Dracula's Castle, like the gardens, entry hall, clock tower, all that.

ITT: Every criticism is dealt with defensiveness and apologetics

Pointing out flaws in a game that's in active development is not a review, but a healthy exercise. If there's a way to improve something I'm sure the dev team would appreciate it, specially when they're actively taking feedback from the community.

These threads can serve as a think tank for ideas and future communications with the team. Maybe you guys are so close to the project that you're tired of hearing "the art looks mediocre", but instead of taking that as a negative, take it as face value and try to discuss a possible way on how it could possibly be improved.

Don't be complacent and assume it's going to get improved, it's better to voice that it can be improved, so they can focus on working on it, instead of possibly letting it slide.

There are only 2 things right now that I feel could be improved upon, the colour pallet it just needs a bit more life, especially seeing as the whole game is centred on stained glass things, and speed it up slightly although that's a preference from someone who plays DMC games on turbo not something that's needed

Castlevania literally reused the same sprites for years. The reason they had such polished art is because they just kept building on top of what they already had. Of course a game built from the ground up won't have visuals as polished as the latest entry in a series that's been polishing it's sprites for more than a decade, no matter what it's budget is.

There is no 3DS Castlevania?
It looks exactly like the other IGAvanias so far. It has the same movement, similar room layouts, similar mechanics, etc. Right now it's kind of easy but it is the first level and those were always easy as fuck.

I'm not even sure if speed is the issue, but something feels a little odd with the jump. It kinda feels floaty but I don't know exactly how to put the finger on what's wrong with it.

And what bothers me most in the background is the repetition of the same assets (crates, sacks, barrels) in various dispositions. Again, I'm sure it's just placeholder and it can be improved but it's better to talk about it.

And I'd probably add some non-intrusive foreground objects (possibly blurred) to add a greater sense of parallax when moving. Also it would be nice entering a room and seeing rats scurrying away, as to indicate a sinking ship, there's a lot stuff they could add to make it more interesting and vary the environment.

Just as an experiment though I'd like to see if the visuals would actually be improved by rendering the 3D in a parallel projection, because when going up and you see the bottom of the platforms it's a little bizarre seeing her noclip through the objects like that.

I'm not denying they reused the same sprites, hell even if they weren't a 1:1 reuse of the same image they would still build upon the sprites from the previous games.

But even reusing the assets for the mobs, the background art always managed to stay interesting and varied, even when they were essentially going to similar locations and the usual castle entrance and those stairs up to dracula's room. They consistently pushed the art with every passing game, and it always remained one of the gold standards of how to do pixel art right. (well, maybe SNK trumped them a little)

While the backgrounds in Bloodstained do look like they could use some sprucing up, that's such an ancillary detail that I think it's too early to critique it. I'm sure people will post the "i-its just an alpha" image but to a degree it's true, it's an early demo, one can't expect it to look like a final product. Not to mention we've only seen two environments so far.

It just seems to me critique would be more useful aimed at the movement and combat mechanics/animations right now, which definitely need more polish, rather than the background art.

Yeah I think they were going for that classic symphony of the night turning animation but it either doesn't really fit the character or they missed the mark. I think the flowing cape really added something to that animation as well, and it probably looks weird without it.

The 8 directions slash was the least of its problems. They gave you such an amount of overpowered artillery that by the end game you could cheese any boss by just spamming projectiles in a distance safe spot.

This is especially when you get to a room with just the right enemy types and placement that it well suited for quick re-entry to spawn more for seamless hack and slashing with perfect flow. In the end Crapcom, Konami, Namco, etc USED to deliver extremely high quality games because they had whole companies worth of people working on art, design and music while the developers developed the game.
Then the developers left and it was notthing but pretty looking bad games, then they cut costs and we're on to the current generation.

On the other hand, the developers without the powerhouse art farms are delivering games that look fun to play but mediocre to look at and the music isn't that good despite being Yamane. Maybe she isn't being paid enough, maybe Iga doesn't have the balls to push her as much as Konami did because the former is a favor and the later was a job.

Who knows, the point is gaming was better when presentation, gameplay and marketing were all pretty much independent from each other and playing with a whole deck of cards rather than sharing (and of course putting most of the budget on marketing and distribution).

Ok here's what I think is wrong, given that this is an alpha they have plenty of time. I think this is a good start though.

Model clips through platforms, either it needs to be rendered in front or there needs to be a jumping down animation.

Monsters look plain and seem to be untextured and relying mostly on shaders. Monster design is good but need more detail.The Buers (lion headed wheel of goat legs) looked pretty good though. Boss seems especially lacking in surface detail. Also she needs to be more teh sexy (picture related).

Hair needs animation/physics. Scarf physics look greatly improved over the last dev update.

Lever detail looks good but needs more color, I think they need to add some full screen filtering and saturate the colors a bit more.

Oh and FYI Guilty Gear XRD was developed using Unreal 3 and a lot of the stuff that Arc System Works developed for that game were folded into Unreal 4 so it's not true that this kind of game is hard with Unreal 4, they specifically made it a lot easier to do with UE4. You can even do pixel games easily with it now. The whole idea of UE4 was to make it a general purpose engine. So you can say, make a game with pixel art that uses subpixel scrolling (i.e. uses GPU hardware to move your pixel art around) hardware alpha transparency and mixes it with 3D elements.

IGA said they tried orthogonal projection and didn't like how it looked. They could just render the model as a separate layer when the model drops through a platform so it appears in front of the geometry. They already seem to be doing that with the shadow blob things that fly around.

It has been said MULTIPLE times now that that is not the actual music from the game, it was added in post because the soundtrack was drowned out in the recording The track they used is a cleaned up version of a song that was demoed early in the kickstarter which had shit recording quality (the original sounds like it was recorded over the phone)
