You can still download the "Legacy version" (which is basically everything up to Xen)
The paid version is just to support them as they work to unfuck the complete mess that was the original Xen and include it at the end of the Legacy version. Then there's rumors they MIGHT remake Blue Shift/OpFor in it as well, but as of yet that's only a "maybe".
You still get nearly the entire game (minus literally the worst fucking thing about the original that literally nobody misses) for free.

The original mod release was free. They have now released it on Steam so you can buy it, and when xen is released you get the update for free. It's still free on their website and buying it is merely a way of showing support. Its normally insanely discounted, I paid £4 for it.

The "zombies" are actually alive from what he says, and the swarming effect similar to world war Z may not be an entirely original idea, but it is new to video games. Not everything has to be 100% original for it to be enjoyable, sometimes games can take inspiration from a few different sources and create something new.
