Steam's got RE4 on sale for $7. Never had a gamecube back in the day but heard a lot of good things about this game. How's the port? Is this the best version of the game or did they fuck it up?

Everything you need to know:
Headshots are pointless until mid-late game, if you've kept & upgraded the default pistol. It's ultimate upgrade makes headshots get criticals (OHKs) 30% of the time, rather than 10%.
Until then, headshots are 10% OHKs, 90% inferior staggers. No extra damage is done.
Shooting legs, running up & kicking them, then knifing them while they're on the ground is the pro strat.
You don't need a rifle, but it does make some sections more convenient.
Default rifle is more stylish, second rifle is better in every way.
TMP is OP, it's the only gun you need. Great DPS, great ammo efficiency, giant clips, cheap to upgrade, accurate, everything about it is great.
Punisher is under-rated. Everyone goes for the red-9 or (less frequently) the blacktail, but both are inferior to the Punisher if you're facing more than 2 enemies. Keep in mind that hitting more than one enemy doubles the damage, putting it above the competition there, and unlike any other pistol it can stagger more than one opponent at a time.
Give it consideration.
Default shotgun is cheaper to upgrade but is inferior in every way to the riot gun, which is the most expensive gun to upgrade in the game. The riot gun even supersedes the default shotgun's ultimate, just rolling it up into its base stats.Striker's A SHIT, mediocre damage, horrible range & the ugliest fucking aesthetic in the game.
Otherwise, any gun can be used exclusively & is viable- ammo drops according to what's in your inventory.
So if you want to use the minethrower, you can, but only if it's the only thing you have.

Often, the best combination items take a long time to acquire all the pieces for.

Back in October, I finally played through the Dead Space series, and I loved it. So now, I want to give RE a shot, since RE4 inspired Dead Space so heavily.
I've tried to play RE4 in the past (on GameCube and PC(old version)) and couldn't stick with it because of the shit controls. I also don't like skipping games in series, but RE1,2,3,CV do not look my kind of games. How fucking lost would I be if I skipped right to 4,5,6,Rev?

Try emulating 0,1,2,3 and CV if you want to. In my opinion you should give them a chance, 0, 1 and 2 retained the "not enough ammo" system where you actually have to struggle (at least on your first playthrough) and all of them are quite good or at least decent. You might get frustrated with the controls and/or at first but they were designed to make you feel defenseless which increases the quality of the game.

iGPUs are really shit compared to real GPUs. I don't have any experience trying to run game on iGPU but this game is so old I wouldn't be surprised if you can play it pretty well still, you just won't be able turn FSAA up to placebo amounts at high resolutions. It's worth a shot if you want to play it, if it doesn't run well you can always refund it.

My personal opinion:
- Headshots are never pointless when you have both a chance to crit and the crowd control capability. It's basically win-win. You should focus more on leg shots though once you get the suplex since it's OP, and especially if you only have a few enemies around you. I wouldn't even waste time with any pistol except the Red9. You can't beat its raw firepower. It'll save you the most ammo in the long run and is the most efficient.
- I don't know why you wouldn't want a rifle, especially in the endgame for a particular enemy. You're just making the game more difficult for yourself, especially if OP is playing the game for the first time. Certain sequences in the castle will be a lot harder without a rifle. It makes the game A LOT more convenient, not just more convenient. In the end the semi-auto rifle wins because of the raw firepower and firing rate. I do think you can get by without the bolt-action in the Village but you pretty much need the semi-auto for the Castle onwards.
- TMP is mediocre and gets worse as you upgrade the Red9. It's completely optional
- Punisher is a meme gun and should only be grabbed with the medallion quest to replace the handgun. Why not use a shotgun if you're facing a large group of enemies? Again it can't compete with the raw firepower of the Red9
- Why waste money with the Riot Gun? The shotgun is just used when you're surrounded by enemies. The Striker is not shit at all and blows away the other 2 shotguns in terms of raw damage. Exploiting the capacity upgrades for free ammo gives you so much free shotgun ammo with the Striker and the final capacity upgrade is obnoxious. I don't even bother upgrading the shotgun or riot gun and just use them as get off me tools
My suggestions:
1) Handgun (no upgrades) -> Punisher (no upgrades) -> Red9 + stock
2) Shotgun (no upgrades) -> Striker
3) (optional) Bolt-action -> semi-auto + thermal scope
4) free BB from Castle
5) free RL from Castle
6) (optional) TMP
