I think he was saying GoW inspired many games to come, especially with the way QTEs were handled (I know games like Shenmue had QTEs before GoW, but the way GoW implemented the QTE finishers inspired a lot modern action games.) If you compare the QTEs from GoW to RE4, you can see that modern games copied the style GoW's QTEs more than RE4.

Financially? God of War, probably. Larger install base and it seemed to receive lots of positive buzz from the viewers and critics.
New Zelda looks like Fisher Price Skyrim. Looks the same as all the old Zeldas, but with time-eating sinks like crafting and durability, and spread out over a big, empty overworld.
God of War looks.. like it has potential, I guess, but nothing strikes about it. Seems like its toning down the formula. They didn't show nearly as much as Zelda showed.

Except PS4 exclusives haven't been performing well in sales at all. GoW mainline usually gets 5 million sales (comparing II and III) but with the current attach rate for PS4 owners it doesn't seem like it'll perform better then Uncharted 4 (currently under 3 million sales) or maybe just over it while this is likely the most hyped Zelda game since Twilight Princess since nobody gave a shit about Skyward Sword and this game is pushing a new console even.
Unless GoW is some holy shit on a shit sandwich level of amazing I don't see it going past 4 million in sales.

Financially, it's hard to tell.
Based on the games themselves though, Zelda definitely achieved every goal they set out to accomplish regarding the mechanics of the first game, the open world and other aspects they hyped up for so long. God of War looks interesting, but it also looks generic in that over-the-shoulder style, and the gameplay seems slower as a result. Compared to the other games in the series, it's difficult to tell if it will feel live up to the older games (which weren't so amazing anyway).
Personally, I'm going to say Zelda since I own neither a PS4 or Wii U so the NX has a huge plus for me already.

Resident Evil 7 will out do both. Every main game in the franchise that has ever decided to make a ballsy new step (RE1, RE4, and soon RE7 probably) has done big things for gaming.
Zelda hasn't done anything like that for gaming since OOT. Certainly being Zeldarim isn't gonna help.
GoW sure did bring a far more visceral style to the hack n slash genre that it needed badly to get revitalized, but it's been doing that for six games now. It's latest influence is essentially TLOU tier collection/loot hunting which isn't gonna be big for anything but itself.

Sounds more like it will be God of War with increased Zelda influence. They opted for walk-and-talks instead of cutscenes to keep everything fluid. I would actually prefer cutscenes since those are easily skipped, but I don't think GoW will be a "movie game." We were just given the start of the game which, like many games, is heavy on story to establish the premise.
I could be wrong, but I doubt it and I hope not. Either way it barely resembles the old games.

I've played God of War though. And I've played the Uncharted series and I've played The Last of Us. God of War was pretty fun. Wasn't perfect I had fun with it. Uncharted/TLOU is really boring though. Some of the Uncharted devs are making the new God of War and the gameplay video looked like typical soul-suckingly boring Naughty Dog gameplay. Zelda. Aside from the series being much more popular than GoW, the changes they've made look pretty interesting and could be enough to have a nice change to a classic formula without straying too far from it's roots. God of War, on the other hand, looks like a completely different game. If it weren't for the red on Kratos nobody would have recognized the game. And for a series known for 3d hack-n-slash action, the action looked very dull in this game.

NX won't save it because after buying a PS4 recently, most casual gamers won't be ready for a new console. It doesn't matter what Nintendo classifies it as, either. These people still don't even know the Wii and Wii U are different things. They won't buy the NX in record numbers just for Zelda.
Add to that the fact that no youtuber or streamer will buy it because Nintendo's policy on that cuts any chance of wide appeal of let's plays. That eliminates the entire market of all their fans.
There's also the reviewers. They won't shill out to these sites, so even though (assuming) it's both technically good and entertaining, many will still bomb its scores because they either wanted a fat check or want to spite it for their agenda. Metacritic may be one of the lowest of the series just because of the delusional lie these people told themselves about female Link.
The numbers just aren't there. Nintendo has been digging a grave every since the Wii took off. It's too late to recover with just one game, and afterwards they still won't understand why it sold poorly.
Really though, they deserve it for Other M.
