It's not Mario, Link is a blank fucking slate with no personality other than a handful of facial expressions in the newer ones, and canonically there have been dozens of Links all in different eras and timelines with slight differences, there's literally no legitimate justification for that role to be male only, or even why the Zelda role always has to be female, or Ganon to be male for that matter
