It was really the atmosphere, the fantastic and well connected world design (due to eyeing a multi-game universe originally) and the great challenges that made it a hit. Some of the optional levels you can do to save Mudokons are devilishly hard. Developers simply do not know how to use the obstacles they've created in such varied and challenging ways any more
