Either it's bad and they will be upstaged, the software isn't ready and it will look bad, they think whatever their gimmick is will be stolen, or they are changing what it was in response to the other two.

Because to them, it's all theater. Even while facing incredibly competitive, better-performing consoles, they think hiding their shit for a big reveal will turn heads for more than a minute. Seeing how quickly Miitomo fell off the face of the earth, I think there's nothing left they can do to stay relevant. They put all their eggs in the Zelda basket and there's a really good chance that will flop.
Not to mention, they have an "entire day" of treehouse streaming, and I have no clue when a Zelda trailer, if one, will be shown live. So their core audience that still holds interest in their announcements either A. has no clue when to find what they want to see or B. have to trudge through hours of footage of people playing games to see what they want to see. Which is probably Zelda.
I mentioned this in another thread, but I get the impression that Nintendo's not-so-subtle hints at Link being a female in the new game will be the big gimmick - that you can start the quest with either gender. Which, again, like Miitomo, will get its five minutes of fame and praise, the game will come out, the gender will have zero impact on the story or game or otherwise, and then nothing but backlash from journalists.
I don't know about Nintendo, but after Microsoft's reveal of Scorpio and slim, I sure as hell wouldn't walk in with that mess in my hands. A hybrid console rumored to be "as powerful" as a PS4...

They can't be very confident in it. Even with the big risk they took with Revolution, they still communicated the design philosophy that went into it, and showed off the controller before unveiling the system.
With NX, it's complete silence. We don't have confirmation what type of hardware it is.

Nintendo started off as a card company in the late 1800's, ever get the vibe that they'll drop gaming altogether and focus more on quality of life apps and toys? Expand on the amiibo fever?
That's the shittiest part about my point - they can go out of relevance, not money.
