What did you guys think about Valkyria Chronicles? I just started playing this game and man, the gameplay is fun! It's like casual version of Jagged Alliance with anime characters. Even one of the battle themes starts with few notes that reminds me with one of JA2:s battle themes. The tactical aspect is engaging and not as unforgiving as the old classics, and you get to also enjoy choosing your own setup of soldiers.
Though the cutscenes, the plot, the main characters. It's really horrible, full of lighthearted anime cliches in a setting that contradicts them completely. Absolutely tone deaf. I haven't finished it yet, but I've heard there's a beach episode in it. Not sure if that's true, but honestly I'm not even surprised what I've seen in the first few chapters. I started to skip all cutscenes further I got into the game. It reminded me of Escaflowne, anime which I could predict pretty much everything 5min prior because it was so predictable.
Anyway, planning to finish it. Enjoying the combat system and my soldiers.

Use the main tank and smoke her so she can't see and attack you and either do the level the way it was intended and raid up the ramps or cheese it and use a sniper and snipe her through the smoke for an easy win.

Shame that the sequels were PSP trash.
VC2 especially is super animu-uguu crap to the max, with tinier maps and shit.

A bit too casual. As in real, smart tactical moves don't matter, character movement is lacking (can't change stance, can't climb over obstacles, etc.) and maps tend to be very linear and funnel you through a specific path.
I don't hate it, but the gameplay has the depth of a puddle.

That's actually one of the great points about the game in my eyes. It's able to build clear personality for the extras without anything more than 3 or so paragraphs of backstory and a handful of in game dialog to the point where you can actually care about these people who would otherwise be throwaway characters.
