Dead Space was the only truly good one. Dead Space 2 was all right, but it was a basic re-hashing of the first game with few improvements. Dead Space 3 killed the franchise.

Should've been about different instances of encountering the markers by different people.

The first was fantastic, second was good but giving him a voice and letting his vagina ooze the bullshit it did was a mistake.

3 was a mistake altogether.

A good horror story line that went COD to appease the EA cock. It had such potential.

DS1 was ok, but it got boring halfway through. 2 was fantastic.
I don't acknowledge 3's existence.
>>
>>341034379
Absolutely loved the first one. Its atmosphere and gameplay was specifically made to frighten the shit out of you, and it did its job well.
The second was great too, but it had lost something from the first. Improved some stuff, ruined some other
Third : fun in coop but all in all just third person action game, not horror at all. Doesn't feel like a dead space.

3 wasn't very good but I still enjoyed it. Will I ever get 4?

I remember playing the first Dead Space and legitimately being scared thoroughly for the first couple of chapters. After that, the scare factor wore off until new enemies arrived.

Dead Space 2 had a surprisingly fun multiplayer and I enjoyed Dead Space 3 for its weapon customization.
>>
>>341034601
Agreed. The weapon creation was pretty silly in 3, but that did lead to some amusing weapons. Had a good time co-oping on the highest difficulty with my brother while we blasted necroforms with our over-under-double-revolvers. DS3 is only playable with a friend.

Mostly the fact they pretty ditched the horror element entirely and had microtransactions.

Other than that is was a solid TPS.
>>
The first one is one of the most atmospheric titles to release last gen and maybe at all.

There's an anon that frequents the Dead Space threads that likes to say Dead Space 2 was the best cinematic experience in a video game done right, and I 100% agree with him. The entire game is a cinematic adrenaline rush from beginning to end, but it's not heavy handed in its delivery and hardly ever takes control away from the character.

Dead Space 3 was easily the low point in the series, but not entirely a bad game in and of itself. It suffered from obvious EA bullfuckery like microtransactions, story content locked behind online only multiplayer, amongst other more minor things. Spending time in space was a blast, weapon crafting was fun (but completely breaks the game very early on with the right builds), universal ammo was a bit of an annoyance but simultaneously a convenience so I still don't know how I feel about that, I'm a sucker for snow levels so I actually enjoyed the ice planet atmosphere, and it was nice to shoot apart humans for once but I felt there was maybe too much of it, and pretty much all of the characters were pants on head retarded. Never played the DLC but I hear it's GOAT.

Overall a great series, but not without it's flaws.
>>
>>341035574
>>341035783
>>341035868
The series has great gameplay but ti worked much better in the horror setting, taking away al the horror and focusing on combat was retarded and literally no one liked that besides people that weren't into the series for what it really was, a survival horror game. If you can't see that than i'm very sorry for you.

Dead Space 3 was kinda like playing a bad gears of war game but the crazy stuff they did with the secondary character for the coop mode was stellar in my opinion. I wanna see more of that stuff in coop focused games.
>>
>>341037324
>will never play as carver because no friends that likes Dead Space
Playing with randoms is no fun.
>>
>>341034379
All three games are worth playing. The backslash against the third one was stupid as fuck, like the other games weren't third person shooters, you had to spend any money at all to get good weapons, or it would make sense for either the protagonist or the player to pretend it's a horror game after all he's been through.
>>
1 had great atmosphere, but got horribly repetitive as it went along. the same environments, the same objectives, the same monster closets. those godawful turret sequences. there was a few interesting setups here and there and the ending section from a story progression stand point was cool, but id never really call it more than just a "Good" game.

2 lost some of that thick, lonely atmosphere and its last few chapters felt lazy, but i thought it was a much better game overall. substantially better level progression and environments, improved combat with an overall better polish to everything. well structured unique enemy placements (they dont go overboard like 1 did with some of the more intimidating ones), more unique setups and encounters, a surprisingly good continuation of the story that handled issac well with some good mindfuck moments (of which 2 has by far the most memorable sequences and moments in the series) and ellie was a solid female character. good ending overall. thought it was a great sequel in almost every way. as far as horror-tps this was the bets we got since RE4.

3 probably gets shit on more than it deserves, but its still nothing great. nice weapon customization, cool coop implementation, good amount of content overall and the core combat is still fun. unfortunately the rest of it just feels OK. even when they go back to the more space-y horror vibe, none of it feels unique or inspired in anyway outside of the more open areas. its all the same stuff we've seen before. theres a few stand out bits, but nothing great. environments change a few times, but the areas within them feel padded thanks to the optional side missions. the story while probably a natural progression of where it was going to go still feels like shit with a god awful love triangle thrown in and a complete butchering a formally positive female character. the ending was also shit as well. its still a pretty game, but that unique spark was gone and it didnt need to be.

The whole series is great, the only people who say 3 sucks are the same people who say Dark Soul 2 sucks because it's the only 7/10 in a 9/10 series.

Not even friends that like shooting games? Dead Space 3 is barely a survival horror game, it's so filled with mindless action that anyone who enjoys killing stuff can play it I think.

DS1 and 2 are fun, never been more bored with a game before playing DS3, holy shit it was bad.

More accurately, strangleheld by its publisher and forced into being something it was never meant to be, putting the developers/director in an awkward place, trying to do what they/he can to still turn out a quality production.

Still one of the best trilogies I can think of, every game has something going on for it, even though for 3 its only the co-op.
Maybe its best it died before it turned totally sour. 3 is really not as bad as some pretend, even though it is significantly worse than others.

DS 2 > DS1 >>> DS3

I won't disagree that DS2 lost some of its horror elements (especially the feeling of total isolation), but everything they added definitely made up for it. I think giving a voice to Isaac was a great decision.

I think you're missing a surprisingly good entry there anon.

the only problem with 3 is the microtransactions

>>
>>341035186
This. 2 perfected the formula and showed some great development for Isaac being a dude getting more and more fucked up. The scene where he sits by the window while Ellie is in the ship and a hallucination of Nicole talks to him is by far one of the most memorable scenes of that game before the end.

I'm sick of this harcuuurrrr gamhuuur shitty opinions. Do you want to speak like a true gamer? A hadcore gamer? You only have to say that you hate Dead Space 3, Assassins Creed 3 was shit but Black Flag is good, and that Mass Effect 3 ruined the series. The rule of 3 to spot the sheep. Those three games were great, came altmost at the same time and created the necessity of being shated on by the young teenagers that wanted to fit in.
>>
The problem with the third game is that closer to episode of Scooby Doo than to the previous games.
>>
>Dead Space = Mass Effect

>>341041220

For some reason the third entry always kinda sucks, it's true for movies as well (Matrix, Alien, The Godfather, Pirates, tec). Maybe it's because people tend to run out of ideas and it's easier to make one sequel - rule of thumb is that it just needs to be bigger than the first entry.
>>
>>341035783
It's be like how Aliens is different from Alien. Action in a horror setting.

I give DS3 mercy because I loved the space parts, and the story vindicates it for me The co-op was also fun.

I just wish the novels were written better. I love the setting.

The first game was an okay horror game but heavily relied on jump scares and scripted events, so every subsequent playthrough isn't interesting at all.
The second one largely ditched the horror and was an entertaining action game.
The third one went for co-op shit and it was just bad.

>>
>>341042636
You don't have to keep track of separate ammo types, reducing the amount of stress in a game that supposed to have you on your toes and manage your inventory to survive.

It also means that you can afford to spend your ammo more willy-nilly, since you know you can always find more ammo for all your guns.

>>341042823
I fell in love with the scientist's journal here. It gave me shudders thinking about the setting.

>I remember telling my college professor I wanted to study xenoarcheology. He laughed right in my face. 'There’s nothing to study,' he said. 'It’s all dead space. No alien life exists out in the universe.' In a way, I guess he was right. There is no life beyond our system, only a trail of extinction, brought by the Moons. And now it’s right on our doorstep.

>>
>>341035783
Appallingly unnecessary high-school style love triangle story, relentless waves of enemies that abandon any kind of tension in favour of constant killing, the whole ice planet was shit, the 'true ending' was in DLC, not standard in the base game, which still rates as probably one of the biggest middle fingers to players of all time.

I admit the space section in DS3 was fantastic, pity the whole game wasn't like that
>>
>>341036914

Yeah but in 2 you revisit the Ishimura and you see they're trying to clean it up and then you come across the rooms with all the UV lights and the blood and bloody handprints all over the place.

As a whole, I enjoyed the entire series.

Even that shoot gamer they had for the Wii and then included in the Day 1 Edition of 2.

That was bretty good too.
>>
>>341043036

> "It's all Dead Space 3: Awakened DLC"

None of them were good. Even the first one was just a bad clunky third person shooter with a shit camera that relied on (predictable) jump scares. AAA horror has been dead for a long time.
>>
>>341043484

It was telling that the Ishimura was the scariest part of DS2. I think they should've just left the first game alone and come up with a new ip afterwards.
>>
>>341043196
To be honest, the only thing that I hated about DS3 was having to install Origin, and making the true ending DLC.

Seriously, actually cutting the story's end off because you know people will buy it for completion is the biggest Jew thing you could do.

>>341043664
Brethren Moons make it all too worth it in my eyes man.
>>
I think the genre shifting was parralel to Isaac mindset
In the 1rst one he was trapped alone in a ship and he have someone to find hence the survival horror gameplay
In the 2nd he still have regrets about Nicole but want to turn the page hence the action horror gameplay
And finally for the 3rd game he is free from his regrets and demon and he search to eliminate the source and not being the guy who is trapped in a ship full of ayyys
TL;DR : Isaac man up each game so the action gameplay in the third is partially explained
>>
>>341042774
He actually tried to destroy the original marker. The heads of Unitology killed him and made him a martyr because he was already being worshipped
>>
>trilogy
But I only see 2 Dead Space games? EA never made the third one and I think that's for the best. It would probably be even more of a shooter than DS2 and with microtransactions.
>>
I honestly think in terms of quality, DS1 and DS2 are interchangeable. Each has something over the other, and which is better depends on the player's preference themselves. DS1 had better atmosphere, and an okay story. DS2 was less scary, but had a more interesting story and a better villain in the form of psycho dead girlfriend.

DS3 was just bad. Inexcusably bad, and it frustrates me to this day.
>>
>>341043508
I know you're just a fag with shit opinions but if you think dead space 1 relied on jumpscares as its only way of terrifying the player than you have zero imagination or were playing the game on easy.

What do you take objection with? Because those aren't even saying the same thing.
I played about halfway through DS3 before giving up, it just wasn't fun at all. It was mediocre as a shooter because it was designed around co-op and in SP enemies are very fast while you're still just as slow as you are in the last game, and it's balanced around you having a second player around to cover your back. It's utter shit as a horror game because there's nothing to it now but rooty tooty point and shooty.

I don't think there was a moment of DS2 I didn't love. Yes, I did love the sun jump scare. That was one of those jumpscares where you jump but then laugh your head off over how stupid you feel.

1. Awesome game. 9+/10 I was very supprised with it. Resident Evil 2 of this generation.
2. Good one. 8/10. It felt more like a movie but it was alright.
3. 5/10... Meh. Big disappoitment. And this whole microtransactions... And paid ending. Just no.

I'm with you.
The story was more.. active? in the 2nd one, like more things happened. I also liked the bigger emphasis on action.
The 2nd one was more balanced between feeling cool and blasting aliens, while the 1st one was more skewed towards the scary aspects. In this sense, for some reason I just liked the balance of dead space 2 more.

Haven't even touched dead space 3 and probably won't after hearing and seeing the shit hitting the fan

Why is the plasma cutter so damn satisfying to use? Cutting those limbs just never gets old.

Just started Dead Space 2. It hasn't gripped me like the first one did. Still a decent game just not near as good and engaging as the first.
>>

DS>DS3>>DS2

DS2 started all the shit, voiced protag, too many enemies, creep instead of horror, shitty plot lines, shitty romances, etc.

So what are some good sci-fi horror games in the vein of The Thing or Dead Space?

Come to think of it, was The Thing game from the last decade any good?
>>
>>341046114

Loved it as a kid and it scared me shitless then - but i was about 10.

Objectively it's a fucking mess of a game, is nothing like the film, bugs out in hilariously bad ways, difficulty is all over the place, story goes off the deep end and there is no real 'thing' consistency.

Probably worth it for a laugh.
>>
>>341045359
I only used the cutter in the first game, in the second i switched it up with the javelin because the jav gun was also satifying

>>341034379
Crafting system would have been better if it had been replaced by a mining mini-game.

Too bad DS1 is completely broken on PC. Thanks EA for porting it and breaking it even more during the next years.

They modelled him after the actor who played him in DS2. Also, he had plenty of time to become a great fighter in DS1.

No.

DS1: Event Horizon/The Thing
DS2: Aliens/The Thing
DS3: Maybe one day I'll play it

DS1 is judged on it's horror aspects, which is, regardless of anyone's opinion; superior to DS2.

>>
>>341036914
this is accurate. I wonder if thats what they were going for when they made the games.
>>
>>341056031
I blame EA for what went wrong gameplay wise for DS3. The story makes up for it though, but I had to wait until I could get it used.

And I normally don't buy DLC that is so obviously such a money grab, but I made an exception just that once.
