Batman Arkham Asylum did a pretty good job of this
They always knew you were around but they but mostly didn't believe you were in their general area you and once they found a single body and realized you were in that room they went from alerted to being scared to straight up panicking

Fuck this one skinny orc would not die, he showed up in a big battle after like the third time I killed him covered up with a bag by now to hide his hideous face, and before I could even fight him a carragore slaughtered him.
Then he fucking came back at least one more time, the final time I killed him he just died like a normal orc, like by then he wasn't considered a boss or captain or whatever anymore.
