Bethesda has--for there shit-tier standard--done right by the ID Soft games. DOOM is a strong early candidate for GOTY from both mainstream gamers and Doom faithful, Wolfenstein: New Order was---while divergent in style from the 30 year old forefather--still thematically aligned and fun.

The gaming world today just can't handle a game like Quake, players today don't have the same sort of drive and focus that people did back in the day. FPS games specifically used to have a great community of players who were there because they enjoyed the competitive spirit of the games, people learned from losing and bettered themselves over time. Now though? casuals have flooded the scene and it's bloated with vast hordes of players who are just there to be there, they don't care about winning or competition but rather just unlocking hats.
You can see it in every single multiplayer FPS game today, the community itself completely ruins Overwatch due to this fact. You expect a more hardcore game like Quake to work out? Not a chance sadly.
If Quake is so simple why haven't any fans gotten together to make a game based on it? Slightly different aesthetic and title to not get sued but if it plays the same so what?
