Shouldn't ya'll be asking what was wrong with 3? It had some fun memes, but the story was shit, waifu pandering was garbage, Ciri was handled bad, Wild Hunt was handled worse, Skellige treasures, etc. What I thought it did right was force you to actually use signs, though the leveling was almost entirely garbage and most of those "skills" were useless aside from several ones. Also removed ZA WARUDO from 2. Soundtrack was 10/10, Geralt wasn't edgy enough, game was buggy as all living hell and the combat was meh.

It felt like fan fiction of the story that is told in the books. CDPR even gave Geralt another woman and another elder blood child that he was destined to be with. Now I am not saying it was bad but they had no idea where they were going story wise with the first game so they didn't really plan it out. Hell in the beginning, Geralt wasn't even going to be the protagonist and him and Yen were going to be npcs and Geralt would have been the mentor to the Witcher, but they obviously changed this among other things. With the second game came out they decided to go back to the roots and with the third one it was a full blown sequel to the books. The story of the first game became an after thought almost like it was the step child of the family.

But Aard and Igni got butchered compared to 1 and 2, as in they were useless damage wise, and you had no reason to use Aard when you have Axii, which is basically a ranged stun for most enemies. Dark Souls and all souls games have different weapons with different styles and movesets, so you can pull some really fancy shit there, especially in BB. In TW, you have light and heavy attacks, and the fucking counter. That's it.
CDPR improved the presentation and writing, but they've never been able to craft good RPG systems. The combat isn't even strictly what I'm talking about: their leveling systems have only gotten shittier over time, crafting has never been as good as it was in the first game and they continue to fall into the trap of making each level up not only take longer to achieve but making it less and less significant.
You know what would massively improve The Witcher 3's leveling? If instead of leveling up each skill five times you only leveled it up once for the full bonus. Afterall, you can only equip a handful of skills at a time.

At least they do try to address shit. The Roach quest shows that they know horse controls are shit. Hearts of Styone addressed the story problems in vanilla. Blood and Wine addressed the pathetic boss fights, reused monsters, weak human foes, and the rather shitty post ending state in vanilla. I remain optimistic that Cyberpunk will benefit from them learning from their first attempt at open world. Hopefully stuff like controls and combat will be improved. The game had flaws, but even the things it does badly were done worse afterwards. The combat system has its limits, clanky and everything, but is deeper than its subsequent iterations and has a wealth of one hit kills, which are great in any combat system and really work to cement Geralt as a master swordsman, on top of looking very nice, without the help of cutscenes, and looking logical. If someone is stunned you don't do double damage, you aim for a weak point and you go for the murder stroke.
Still my favorite after all these years. It's flawed but the sequels did it worse.

That's the problem with Geralt. He has a fighting style that's set in stone. I actually admire how much cdpr stuck to canon with how he fights they even got the twirls right. The issue is it is rather bland like you point out. He has like 7 signs in canon and cdpr seemed to have condensed heliotrope into quen and they removed another one but his magic is basic. His magic is considered to be pathetic in universe so there is only so much you do there. My hopes that if there is ever another Witcher game it's not a Witcher we play as but a mage. Could be a nice change of pace and perhaps deliver a combat system that is satisfying.

Even side characters have character development. That amount of attention to detail and player interaction is what separates a good game from a great game.
