Actually, Emeralda is unique in affecting her Gear stats. It's not shown, but as an adult she gets a 20% damage boost applied to all on-foot and gear damage, and this is done post-accesories. As an adult, Crescens matches Xenogears' damage point for point but is faster, and it will outpace its damage as you add more engine boosting accessories to both.
Also some character stats do carry over to gear, like evasion and accuracy, where she gets another major advantage due to her stat growths as an adult.
Adult Emeralda is probably the best character in the game, but it's not like it matters by the time you can get that kind of setup anyway.
It would be pretty easy to tie in all the Xeno games together if you work with what Alvis tells you at the end of Xenoblade Chronicles.

Is that a common problem when playing on the PS1? I know when you play it on a PS2 you get a similar problem, only you get it because it doesn't disable the jump. The game registers the random encounter going off, but because of game lag due to it being unfinished, you can jump right after the trigger for a random encounter, and the encounter will still happen in midair. It completely stops your forward momentum, too, so if you're in the middle of a platforming section where you can get into a random encounter, like that one cliff right before the first Elly fight on Disc 1 or basically all of Babel Tower, you'll just fall straight down and hope it doesn't happen again after you climb all the way back up to where you were before.

World building was never Xenogears' strong suit, though. Its plot is one of character motivations and interpersonal relationships rather than one of world building and major events. It's a story of a small group of extremely powerful individuals who hold the fate of the world at their fingertips and their motivations and decisions are its thematic core. When Grahf says that the average human on the planet is worthless chattel, he's not kidding. There's such a massive disconnect between the main cast and the average inhabitant of Xenogears' world. Nobody knows what's really going on and they're caught up in their own petty conflicts. If you ask me, that hurts the world building rather than improves it.

The problem is none of that stuff really matters. The power struggle between Shakhan and the Fatimas, the ordeal at Kislev, the stuff about Ethos being a front... none of that stuff retains its relevance as the story unfolds. By the time you get to travel around the overworld map in disc 2 - following hours of tedious cutscenes and throwaway boss fights - the planet's a desolate wasteland and almost everyone is either dead or turned into a mutant.
