They already rushed and skipped a lot of buildup and character development to get to where they ended it where it did. (It was my biggest complaint about the film). This is objectively wrong. Full CGI is MUCH easier to do than live action/CGI.
Full CGI:
>Make the sets, models, characters etc.
>Animate them.
>Light it.
>Render it out.
>Post process a bit.
Live action/CGI mix:
>Schedule shoots on green screen stage (though not all the actors have to be there, see Ian McKellan's breakdown).
>Set up tracking points and markers. Probably give your actors a few mo-cap dots for additional roto.
>Do a dozen takes.
>Feed the footage and camera data to the 3D animators.
>Build sets.
>Camera track a SHIT load to ensure 100% accuracy.
>Animate the scene meticulously so every CGI character matches up with its live action counterpart (even with mo cap, the data isn't 100% accurate in the initial feed, so it needs a great deal of clean up).
>Light your 3D scene to try and match the stage lights.
>Colour correct your green screen footage (after extensive green keying and clean up) to match up with the 3D lighting.
>Go through and rotoscope any random shit the director wants to add in. "Oh, can we edit him so that he's got a pony tail for costume consitency?"
>Render first pass with both plates (in truth you're probably working with nearly a dozen plates now) to check everything.
>Do a few more adjustments and post process clean ups.
>Probably have to change it all the next week when the director changes their mind a little bit.
