I'm on the 10th or so Verse of Dod1 and I'm not entirely sure how I feel so far, the characters and story seem good, but the game plays like ass, it might be one of the worst I've played in a while. What's to defend? It stands on its own merits. Its own terrible and evil merits.

But that's exactly why I love it. And what I love more is that Taro's reasoning for it is so completely innocent. When asked why he made it so ridiculous, he appeared confused and simply responded "It's the final boss. Isn't it supposed to be hard?"

The innocence of his logic and the evil of his actions are a truly BEAUTIFUL contrast.

Funny, I felt the exact opposite. I have zero sense of rhythm, and D1's final boss was a welcome but exceedingly difficult challenge, while D3 was impossible bullshit I had to use a guide video to pass
After a couple hours of retrying D1's final boss I could do most of it with ease but D3's final boss offered no such relief
Also, for all the talk Ending E gets, Ending B is pretty underrated
>>
>>340830420

I can barely beat the second difficulty in the Taiko DS games.

>>
>>340830613
Well, 1 and 3 are both like that. 2 isn't, but 2 isn't particularly relevant to the series' canon.

The story is quite simply that the series has a subtle "song has power" theme running through it, and Yoko Taro is an insane asshole. God I love him.
>>
>>340830613
It's thematic factors between 1 and 3, 2 and Nier don't do this. Infact the final boss of 3 is basically meant to be PTSD for those who beat 1, really.
>>
>>340830602
No, but the US fucked up by nuking the quarantined area.
>>

>>
>>340830790
Ending B is my personal favorite. Fucking Inuart ruining everything.

And to further the theme, I do have a bit of an ear for music and was eventually able to beat 3's final song (sans the invisible notes, of course... needed a timing guide for them), and still have not beaten 1's to this day. I figure success is basically rote memorization. To beat 3's, you basically just have to close your eyes and go by the beat alone.
>>
>>340825447
Can anyone give a brief preferably spoilered (for other anons) summary of what happens after this battle? I'm simply not capable of beating it.

Never played this game, but this boss looks cool as hell. It's a typical rhythm imitation minigame. Give us a rhythm, wait a beat, repeat the rhythm back.

Granted, the OP said he's not musically inclined, but I can almost guarantee I could do this without eyes. Anyone with basic rhythmic understanding could.

I believe during something at GDC, Taro said that his design philosophy with game creation is that the creators, the player and even the game are not the priority - the priority is the emotional impact the game has on the player. And if the game has to "suffer" to some degree for that, it may be worth it.

I really fucking like that philosophy. A lot of my favourite games are games I loved so much because on top of being strong games in their own right, they delivered on atmosphere through mechanics and presentation in ways that might not necessarily be done in other games for fear of being too tone-changing. The ride to a colossus in Shadow of the Colossus is slow, empty and has little for you to do - any other time that would be bad design - but in SotC that time is contemplative and builds suspense for the colossi fights while also building the setting since each new path to a colossi has new architecture or a new landscape.

Taro games do this a lot, pulling the rug from under you or dragging you through something different and it might not always work amazingly, but it's refreshing and incredibly entertaining to me. The fact his games suffer from low budgets and performance issues is a shame but those are things I'm easily able to forgive, Taro or not.

D3 is flawed, it has a whole bunch of issues that would stop me calling it a "masterpiece", but it's one of the most entertaining games I've ever played overall, and I love it. Same for Nier.

What happened to Taro now? Last I heard he went and created his own company.

It took me 56 attempts to pull it off, which I'm pretty sure is the most times I've ever failed at any boss battle.

Surprisingly, I never really found it frustrating, outside of perhaps when I first encountered one of the final notes.

I personally want him to collab with Vanillaware. They both share the same fascination towards video game food, after all.

It isn't, is it. I was watching the video and I thought it felt a little off, like you had to actually hit the button like a fraction of a second BEFORE it feels like you should. I thought maybe just the video was fucked up though.

Huh? Isn't he still working on Automata? He was at that event where they showed off new gameplay a month or so ago.

Will he make Nier great again?

I never get frustratedly angry but I got annoyed at myself for fucking up. But the entire experience of trying it over and over and overcoming it when I had so much trouble with it was exhilarating.

Definitely one of my favourite gaming experiences.

Also two questions:
1. Is this game on PC?
2. Can the game play any music file or is something specific required?

How did you not already know? I squealed like a goddamn schoolgirl when I saw the E3 reveal last year. And I mean LITERALLY, too. So loud my neighbors heard. In that moment I understood how teenage girls feel at boyband concerts.

This one specifically isn't, but you can get Osu! which has a game mode like this

People make "beatmaps" for Osu! You can find pretty much a large majority of songs you want, as well as easily make your own. Most of them are Japanese/Anime songs though. But there is a lot of variety.

Mikhail destorys Zero and the Flower and brings for the only time in the series a good, happy ending. This is of course only if you don't acknowledge that the Zero in Branch C is going to turn into the dimension hopping Grotesquery Queen.
>>
This was just so fucking beautiful. I loved it. A shame most of the underage redditors here couldn't appreciate a completely different thing once in a while and shat on it before they went back to their latest ubisoft trash.
>>
I tried doing it legit but the fact that you have to do it all over again after a single mistake made it incredibly frustrating.

I tried getting a youtube video but I had hard time properly syncing due to very different delay between my Plasma TV and my shitty LCD laptop screen. When I somehow managed to work it out I kept fucking up near the end. You have to waste too much time on this shit if you don't play rythm games normally.

Ultimately I watched the ending on youtube on my TV and pretended it was the game. Some of these days I hope to come back to it and it legit.

It's just classic Taro. He even warned about it before the game was released.

I genuinely believe Drakengard 3 is a great game, both in plot and gameplay. Same for Nier.
Now Drakengard 1 and 2 are another story.
I love the plot but holy shit did I had to force myself to play through those games.

Drakengard 1 had that godawful gameplay even for its time and some of the missions were ridiculous long. Some of them were worth it, like when you kill the child soldiers, but most of them are just filler between plot scenes and dialogues.
Drakengard 2 the gameplay got a bit better but missions were even more boring, characters were shit, and in the end it was only worth to fight Caim and Angelus.

I think Yoko just wanted to make a RPG but he didnt like turn based battles, so he made a mediocre ARPG, put the plot there and called it a day.
Or he intentionally made the gameplay as painful as possible so people could get the true Drakengard "experience".
>>
>>340836548
Yes and they bashed the shit out of this boss back then. /v/ is pretty much reddit these days. Old /v/ would have loved this and had no trouble with it whatsoever.
>>
>>340836824
Most people who got D3 knew what they were getting into but many people got it out of all the threads that we had prior to its release expecting a Nier type of game.
They didn't expect the bullshit that's all, I doubt any person willing to give this stuff a try can be called reddit honestly.

Which is precisely the point. Most of the people who bashed it had never laid a hand on a drakengard game before and their first introduction to Yoko Taro's stuff was NieR. Aka underage newfags.

Honest to god, that video looked like a Remix 1 or 2 style difficulty. Sure, you need to get a perfect, but I do that on every level anyway.

Neo /v/ is real
>>
>>340839785
>>340840140

It's a fuckin real-time combat-based RPG nigga.
This shit comes out of nowhere and doesn't have anything to do with the rest of the game.

It's not like it's the fuckin final level of a rhythm game.

I highly doubt the majority of the people who have played drakengard 3 are OSU tryhards.

It's difficult to say because, as someone else already said, the timing is different than the rhythm would dictate. Plus I'm 100% confident I'd have lost it with those 3 post-fade notes. I didn't even hear them spawn at all.
>>
>>340841753
If your dad is a musician or musically inclined, he would be more than capable to deal with this boss. I am guessing it was second try because of the silent notes. The problem is that it's a rhythm game final boss in an action game.
>>
>>340840757
It's a reference to those drakengard playthroughs that one guy did that were hilarious.
