Is there any reason to get an 17 yet? When i built my rig back in 2014 I got an 15 because games didn't support hyperthreading well enough to justify the price difference between an i5 and it's equivalent i7. Back then unless you really wanted faster Civ 5 turns or something you were better off with an i5.

If you cheap out on the case, RAM, mobo, don't buy storage, and use a budget or stock cooler you could even bring it down to 1k

I just looked at some more recent benchmarks, some newer games have a small (no more than 10) FPS boost with an i7 compared to an i5. If an extra 100 dollars is worth that (can't really put those towards the GPU since you're already getting the highest end one available) then go ahead.
