Before we had some sexy ass texture work and light mapping which made the hexagons show up and vanish according to lighting conditions. It was crude, sure, but they still managed to pull an alienish material that looked both organic and artificial. Now the gun is literally made of Space Bricks™, reflecting light with the subtetly and detail of a concrete block.
