358/2 introduces one new character, you understand who she is and why she exists, and by the end of the game she's gone serving the one purpose she had from a plot perspective. Instead of creating clutter the plot gives a bit of insight on some details of the larger plot and that's it.
BBS is a mess. It introduces a bunch of completely new characters, creatures and mechanics of the universe, complicates stuff that was previously simple and leaves tons of unresolved matters hanging.
358/2 was slow and not terribly exciting, but it started and ended without making that big of a fuss and it had a nice effective bittersweet moment. BBS took a plot that was already going off the deep end and drove it off its already crooked rails into a tornado.

I loved KH1 because it was the ultimate Disney fanservice game and the visuals plus the music gave it a kinda timeless sense of charm. Plus I really dug the blend of combat/exploration/platforming - the balance was just perfect.
I loved CoM because the battle system was novel and easy to break in fun ways, plus the writing was good.
I thought KH2 was okay because of the combat and boss fights, but everything besides them and the presentation was a big step back from 1 imo
Since then I've kinda liked the story and customization options in BBS and that's about it, and I'm fucking sick of the Xehanort plotline.
I just want another charming, disney-fanservice packed, simple ARPG-Platformer. Okay guys, so the last thing I played was DDD and after that I got kind of lost with all that unchained key or whatever browser bullshit games they've been releasing since.
It's not like I'm your average Joe who doesn't know shit about KH, I've religiously followed the franchise from the first game till DDD, I just didn't know how I was supposed to follow the plot after that, and these unchained games or whatever seem very important.
Knowing KH the franchise probably assumes I've been following this stuff as it came out but I didn't. Is there any material (text, video, or whatever) I can look up to get what's been told in those games that I should know, or is the information still sperging around and what the games provided was not much more than abstract nonsense?

No, not everything. Chi, Unchained, and Back Cover are all a part of the Chi subseries. Back Cover is gonna be from the perspective of the Foretellers while Chi and Unchained are more from the player perspective.
Anyone else still love and have fun with this series and plan on playing after KH3? I know there's been a lot of people who say they plan on dropping it after KH3/The Dark Seeker saga.

I believe KHInsider has a plot summary of Chi so far, actually I think they just uploaded a video with all of the story cutscenes so far. Unchained in Japan is further ahead than Unchained in America but I believe they have what has happened so far.

I'm not a huge KH fan, but I've beaten KH1, KH2, Re:CoM (except for Riku's story, I got bored by that point and just watched all of the cutscenes, sue me), and watched the cutscenes for 358/2 Days.
Now I want to play BBS. I started playing the PS3 remaster on KH 2.5 HD Remix, but my controller is busted up and I can't be assed to buy a new one.
Is the PSP version worth playing through for a casual fan, or are the changes in the Final Mix crucial?

Final Mix adds a Secret Episode featuring Aquathis different than the section in 2.8 and in fact takes place right before itso if you want to play that go for FM. Other than that I think the PSP version is fairly serviceable?Besides Aqua's hair looking like shit.

Changes aren't entirely crucial but I'd suggest making an effort in finding a pad for PS3, you probably want to see Aquas extra episode. If you have any PS2/PSX pads lying around you can probably find an adapter to make them work on PS3 for cheap.
If you really have nothing to work with there then at least find find the Final Mix version in PSP. Fans have translated it fully so you won't miss anything this way apart from worse graphics.
There's also a cheat code for the psp emulator to force 60fps on the game. Make a cheat file for the game using the emulator settings and put this on the cheat text file.
