Well duh. Just wait for the 490 in a few months and see how it compares to the 1070. Then see how the 480's doing

In the end you have a clear view of what to get. If I'm gonna be getting a card for 3-4 years, I'm not gonna be buying on impulse.

Yea, and by the time the 490 after market comes out, then the 490X will be announced without benchmarks. Then when the 490X comes out, the 5XX series will be announced. Then when the 5XX series comes out, then 580 will come out.

Do you see a pattern here?

that's not how GPU releases work. AMD 5xx series and Nvidia 11xx series aren't due until 2018.

GPU releases work in 18 months cycles. Waiting ~3 months for a card that will stay current for ~15 months is in fact a smart choice.

That card DOES look amazing, but something I've found, is as games slowly plateau, and lower settings look more and more like higher settings, I find power isn't as important as continued support, which is, at the risk of being called a shill, something nVidia still has over AMD, by orders of magnitude.
>>
>>340690707

Consoles are gonna release a new one every 3 years

So yes you'd need a new card. I guess the good thing is you'd get a lot more power out of a 300-400 dollar card than a 400 dollar console with paid online.

and they're delusional

It's a 2304 shader 1266mhz design, it already gets 5.8 teraflops vs the 5.9 teraflops a 390X gets; and Polaris is meant to give massive IPCPC increases, on the order of 25%.

It's a shade under the Fury, and this is completely supported by the Fury getting 18287 in 3Dmark11 graphics section

That's more or less because AMD rebrands their cards for years after years releasing the same cards while nivida actually creates new tech and advances GPU research

NVidia already took the rebrand and OC your shit till it literally explodes in people computers and learned their lesson.

AMD has yet to learn this lesson or more realistically don't care. Much like their continued failed driver support that is abysmal

HOW
O
W
>>
>>340691030
It isn't necessarily 2,304 ALUs.
The patent which very likely is 4th gen GCN depicts variable sized CU with 2 or more high throughput scalar units. AMD's future arch isn't a fixed 4X16 SIMD lane design like SI, CI, and VI.

All that AMD confirmed is that the RX 480 has 36CU.
20 of those could be 4X16.
10 of them could be 4x4.
6 of them could be 2x2.
Each of them could have 2 scalar units.

That would work out to only 1,464 vector ALUs.

£320 doesn't include VAT.

The Rx 480 is $199 for the 4GB version, in pounds that's ~£139, with vat included it'll be around £170, so including msi/asus/sapphire stuff, it'll be £200, and maybe £230 at most.

pretty much this. i'd expect older amd cards to work worse than older nvidia cards after polaris/vega comes out because they just don't have the budget to release drivers on that scale. hell, they can't even release good drivers for the cards they currently have, see: doom, mirrors edge catalyst at release.

580 was fermi refresh, not a new generation. Basically a hotfix for the disaster that was Fermi.
780 was just the bigger version of Mepler, 770 and below were rebrands.

The RX 480 is performing around an R9 390 based on 3DMark 11 and the half dozen bench runs on the RadeonDemo profile for AoTS.
The R9 390 outperforms a stock R9 290X for comparison.

Its new arch with a bunch of specialized stuff for VR, and its fairly low power, OC headroom is anyone's guess. It wouldn't be a mind blowing upgrade, but a solid step up for cooler card.
>>
>>340700328
Pascal is somewhat similar to Maxwell, but they are internally very different. Pascal has a longer pipeline and is lower IPC which helps it achieve those clocks.
>>
>>340701070
I doubt youll see the "downgrade" like between Kepler and Maxwell though is my point
>>
>>340700432
but it's true. Just because they write a bigger number on the card doesn't make it a new generation of GPUs.

AMD had the same number of generations in the same timeframe. HD 6000, HD 7000 and R9 200 were true generations and R9 300 was just rebrands with Fury being the bigger version of GCN1.2/Tonga, just like 780 was the bigger version of Kepler/680.

AMD had VLIW5 and VLIW4 in the HD 6000 serious.
There is no such thing as GCN 1.X.
AMD has released cards based on:
Southern Islands
Sea Islands
and Volcanic Islands architecture
All of them being distinctly different. They are now launching 4th gen GCN which is the most radical change ever to the family.

Thats 5 new architectures within a span of 6 years. All bringing fundamentally new IP to market despite older dies continuing to sell.
>>
This might be a stupid question but why don't AMD and Nvidia release more cards at the same time? What's th epoint of spreading out the release? Nvidia and AMD aren't even aiming at the same market yet. Seriously, why couldn't AMD just release the 490 to compete with the 1070, or have the 1060 come out so we could compare it to the 480?
>>
>>340702965
Why don't they release anything to compete with 1070/80? Because it doesn't exist

AMD struggles to keep up with the performance of Nvidia

Its desperation at its finest

Multiple ICs going from concept to final product is a huge process. They generally only work on a few dies at a time because spreading manpower thin wouldn't get anything accomplished faster.

AMD brought out their entry level and mid range first because they already had a customer lined up. Apple. Apple is featuring Polaris 11 based GPUs in a new line of laptops, and Polaris 10 based GPUs in their new iMac.
Thats guaranteed revenue for millions of units right off the bat. Thats how you win contracts.

Current APUs are still cheap generic 28nm HPP produced primarily as mobile chips. Kaveri/Godavari and Carrizo/Bristol Ridge are all created to perform ideally at around 35w, with variable TDP from 15w to 42w~.

They don't have anything with a console level IGP because they'd have no way of justifying it. The CPU side is too weak for the desktop market, and a bigger IGP is questionable in mobile.

The upcoming Zen based Raven Ridge will probably be the first chip to change this. Thats relying on a lot of ifs though.

Not really no, it's 3d mark graphics score puts it well past the 390 and more between the 980/fury

All we really know is both th PS4k and Scorpio will be VR-capable. I've heard the PS4 NEO is close to the 380x, and the Scorpio is close to the 970, but anything can happen.

Regardless is seems likely that both consoles will be able to hold a stable 60fps at 1080p (assuming that the devs unlock their games' framerates), which is obviously a good thing.

No you wouldn't. AMD doesn't have to disclose who their semi-custom clients are, its entirely up to Sony/Microsoft to reveal their product.
All AMD has stated is that they have new semi-custom design wins, and they have had a couple in production since the beginning of the year.

Is directx 12 worth it?

Quick question, I'm kinda new to PC gaming and I don't really know how good my current setup is. I have the GTX 970 and an i5 6400 CPU with 8 GBs of RAM. What do you all think shitty or good enough?
