Just bought it on GOG during the summer sale, what am I in for?

If you're alright with infinity engine games and like reading then it's one of the best games ever made in terms of storytelling.
The combat is pretty bad, but the rest of the game more than makes up for it.
The characters, atmosphere, music and plot are all on point.

Tattoos and journaling. It's dated, but the story's great.
>>
>>340682307

I might look up how to build a good character beforehand, since combat can be at once terrible and rough and really lacks any explanation if you don't know how a 20+ year old D&D system works.

Otherwise, strap in for an awesome adventure: great plot, characters, art, setting, music- everything is on-point.

You shall meet enemies three, but none more dangerous than yourself in your full glory. They are shades of evil, of good, and of neutrality given life and twisted by the laws of the planes.

You shall come to a prison built of regrets and sorrow, where the shadows themselves have gone mad. There you will be asked to make a terrible sacrifice, my Love. For the matter to be laid to rest, you must destroy that which keeps you alive and be immortal no longer.

In my headcanon it's filled with very detailed descriptions of all the evil stuff her succubus instincts tell her to do, but she doesn't do because she doesn't want to be evil. She doesn't let anyone read it because then they'd question her self control and mental stability.
>>
>>340684981
The charisma checks are all stupid crap though. Wisdom is more important because they're the more important checks. They have cooler effects.

It's reading intensive. The gameplay is primarily reading.
>>

Shit gameplay but great everything else.

I lost my files two years ago and every time I consider starting over I think about the slog of shit I'll have to go through to get it running well and all the quests I'd have to do again.
>>
>>340685356
>Holy shit, Annah's level of jealousy toward FFG is so fucking intense. I hadn't heard all these lines.
Annah has a huge crush on TNO and it kind of kills her that Grace is smarter/more cultured/more beautiful etc.

Which is sad because Grace would gladly take Annah under her wing just like she did for all the girls at the Brothel if Annah would let her.
>>
>>340685891
As long as you can read and pay attention to the text, you'Re fine. You don't need to sit down and think what secret lies within the dialogues for an hour

Fuck, I'd totally forgotten that I picked this game up last year. Never finished it, but it drew me in like very few games ever have. I should get back to it. Mage is pretty much the best class, right?

The game is like 95% reading, so unless you think reading is thinking intensive, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

>>340686102
Yeah, but there's no way that Annah would ever let anyone help her. FFG shows much less sexual interest in TNO than Annah does, and the fact that she gets so jealous over nothing other than the fact that she exists and is prettier is telling of just how big of a crush she has.

I guess that's why Annah has always been my favorite of the two. The final romance scene with her is also really good.

>>
>>340687363
No, both routes are fine but going the good one first makes bad route better. I didn't have the heart for the bad one though, stopped it after selling Dakkon to slavery. I can't take that shit

>>340687267
From the outset, Planescape: Torment's designers intended to challenge traditional role-playing game conventions: the game features no dragons, elves, goblins, or other common fantasy races; there are only three swords; the rats faced in the game can be quite challenging to defeat; and the undead sometimes prove more sympathetic than humans. The designers explained that most RPGs tend to have a "correct" approach to solving problems, which is almost always the morally good approach. They called this "predictable and stupid" and wished to make a game with greater moral flexibility, where a particular problem might have "two wrongs or two rights".

One of the best games ever made, not because of the gameplay but because of the story
>>
>have this installed for easily a year or so

>can't make myself play it because it feels so... I don't know the proper term, unoptimized?
I have two monitors and it's a gigantic pain to alt-tab plus some other things I forgot. I think fullscreen is/was clunky. Unfortunately, I lack the attention span to dedicate one singular decent length of time strictly to one game without outside interference. Yes, I had the necessary mods installed too.

In Planescape the player takes an active role in the story, unlike a game like The Last of Us where the story is all told through cutscenes and it's exactly the same every time.

>>340687267
I very much appreciate how PS:T could have taken the easy way out and went for something generic like saving the multiverse, but instead made it a personal quest of finding yourself. That, and despite how powerful TNO can become, he's still small fry in comparison to some truly powerful beings in the planes.
>>

and how about variety of story
will I basically have gotten the full experience playing through it once, or can you get extremely different stories with different choices?
>>
>>340694553
I have played through it once and felt like I got a full experience.

I've heard some choices have drastic differences but I don't feel like I've missed out or anything.
>>
>>340694553
The good and evil routes are very different, but the routes don't branch too much. Just get the highest stats for dialogues (int, wis and cha) and you'll get the full experience on that route
>>
expect overrated shit. the gameplay sucks, the story is poorly written, and only like 2 of the npcs get any real development.

>>340684981
this is pretty misleading. if I remember correctly most of the time you'll have like a 20 wisdom option, a 18 int option, a 20 int option, and a 18 cha option, and the wisdom one is almost always the best choice. also there's a cheap item that you can use to increase your int at any time so there's literally no reason to ever put points into it.
>>
>>340694553
>will I basically have gotten the full experience playing through it once, or can you get extremely different stories with different choices?
It depends on what stats you have on your first playthrough. If you go high INT high WIS like most people recommend then you'll get most if the story the first time around.

Much like Fallout though, doing a playthrough as a dumb brute can be fun too.

TNO's character screen even has a chest slot, but I think the only thing you can put there is the Dustmen robes to escape the Mortuary.

They never actually say what your name is, just that you hear it whispered on the wind in that last sensory stone and you KNOW that it's your name after you'd forgotten for so long.
