So, I'm probably just a normie but I recently found all three Agarest War games for under $10 total. At that price I thought I'd give it a chance.
Now, I'm not new to JRPGs. I've played most of the classics and some of the newer stuff but never one of these budget JRPG titles with full on anime cover art and holy fuck this game is weird.
Can anyone explain to me what is going on with this game? I heard about the generation system which sounded interesting, telling a story over 5 generations but its all tied to this incredibly creepy/cringgey dating sim. I'm also offput by the sheer amount of Anime softcore porn on display in this game. And to top that all off, the game is both linear as fuck and grindy as fuck.
Again, maybe I'm just too much of a normie now but seriously I am now embarrassed to have these on my game shelf.

The problem isn't the dating sim elements, since they tie in to the generations thing which is an interesting idea that would make this game stand out.
The problem is that it's executed in an extremely bad way. Like, they had their ideas but only scratched the surface of what they meant and what it entailed for the players. I played through the first generation before leaving early in the second one, and couldn't let go of some things like:
-They have about the amount of battles expected in a normal JRPG, but each of these battles is a mini-TRPG fight and as a result much longer to execute, making it a chore to slog through
-The portraits face directly at the screen as if talking to a first person hentai game protagonist, instead of having the character talking to each other with properly oriented portraits, like in Valkyrie Profile or Fire Emblem.
-Starting with a new generation involves the new MC having forgotten everything about their last gen father, plus it all happens on a different continent, making it all feel disjointed, and like what you did didn't matter in the slightest, effectively a waste of the core idea of the game
-The fucking DLC. My god.

It's combat is pretty shallow if judged by JPRG standards.
It's combat is downright abysmal if judged by SRPG genres.
The personalities come down to small breasts, medium breasts or large breasts and the story's complete and utter garbage.
