I think Final Fantasy 14 does a pretty good job of it past level 60 they become boss niggers and have a small control over Bahamut and a fraction of his power. Not only that but their job quests feel the best out of every other job as they tie in quite nicely with your story quests giving you a real good feeling about your progression as a summoner.

Summoners and Shamans in Shadowrun are pretty much the same thing, and I've made good use of them there. Summons are free bullet sponges that open have a decent AOE attack or status effect, not to mention you bump up charisma so much for your summons that you so well in verbal contests.
I loved playing a minion master Necromancer in Guild Wars. You could have around a dozen minions at once, buff them to do extra damage, hex enemies to take additional packets of damage every time they get hit with a physical attack, or enchant them with Death Nova, blowing up and dealing AoE damage to every enemy nearby, allowing you to burn down enemies amazingly fast, and they even bodyblocked enemies, acting as tanks.
