Dude I've been a huge fan of chao gardens since the dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure but there aren't any deep or complex mechanics in place at all.

If it was just extra shit where it have nothing to do with completion and was just there for those who liked it, myself including, then yeah, I'd agree with you.
e.g, think about the Special World in Super Mario World. It's not needed to beat Bowser (the end game), but it is needed to 100% it, which obviously can't be avoided, like Chao Garden.
Side Note: I'd wish if a "SA3" were to happen this year that does come with CG, I'd hope it's NOT apart of the main game for 100% again. Just be a side minigame as you said and I'd be 100% for it.

I really hope its not adventure. I fucking hate the adventure games and SA2 is one of the worst games in the series. I didnt consider sonic 3D eligble until heroes but ideally the boost games are the best. But if they have to slow sonic down and add more combat or platforming, heroes is definitely the base to use.
