can't tell if i'm incompetent at rpgs or if i can only enjoy them when i'm underpowered.
The protagonists are usually high school students thrown into a war and rise as the hero. I'm not truly role playing if I make perfect combat decisions from the start. Just like my protagonist, I gain combat experience as I go and learn from my mistakes. My first few stat points may not be perfect but I persevere with a game-winning build all the same.

Minmaxing is only good if specialization is worth it. In situations where various solutions to problems are not available, a minmaxed player will hit a brick wall. That's why I only minmax in a party or when i know exactly what the fuck it is im doing.
How do you enjoy games without min maxing

If a game is well made, it should still be fun for a standard playthrough. Optional super hard endgame content should require min/maxing. Just respec, reorganize, and go for it. If the game doesn't allow that, then it's probably shit in the first place.

I don't min-max if the game is easy enough, or has enough variety in how you can approach it. Everything else is basically min-maxed to hell and back.It can be fun to enter a bossfight and win by the skin of your teeth though.
