I've been playing Black Mesa and reflecting on HL1 recently. While the game has outstanding pacing and good setpieces, in terms of gameplay it's mostly a stepback when compared to Quake and Unreal, especially due to lack of verticality in map design (this can be attributed to, but not excused with, 'realism'), pretty unimaginative enemy patterns and 'netherworld' or whatever you call the alien dimension. In fact, most of the trends it introduced, especially scripted exposition masquerading as interaction - and it is interaction in the most base of manners - only got worse in HL2 onwards. The protagonist's development also got railroaded into stale 'chosen one' scenario with every final showdown being another anticlimax, even when given the full potential of gravity gun later on.
Therefore I believe people who praise the series or want another iteration just fell for Valve's viral marketing and/or have no idea about how to properly judge a video game.
