People defend FFVII because of two things: It was their first FF or it wasn't, but playing FF in 3D was such a new improvement and fresh that left the people totally amazed by the game, also, the game is very good. The timing (release date) of FF7 was so perfect that it always will be the most popular.
However, it isn't better than VI in any way.
