The second game didn't have fucking shops or equipment, and didn't do much to advance the overall story.
The third game is amazing though.
Played the first game, it wasn't too bad.
The second was bad enough that I couldn't get that far into it. The game wasn't fun and the character redesigns looked bad.
Never played the third since I never cleared the second.

I love the series story in spite of it's flaws, but goddamn it is not worth the grind. The second one completely botched the gameplay and as has been said before, only the third one is really any good. At the very least, it made kosmos look less like a 30-40 something office lady that takes yoga on the weekends
Every time I try to finish that game, I get completely sidetracked by the card game and that's it for me.

Not really. The third game has a pretty extensive encyclopedia, and you can definitely skip the first game. Literally all it does is introduce characters.
And yeah, the whole thing with the Zohar and restarting the universe when shit gets fucked and the time-traveling undead Testaments.

the plot goes nowhere, the game is extremely linear (it's basicaly FF13 before people whined about FF13 to death) the pacing is all over the place, the 2nd game was so bad it left an horrible aftertaste in everyone mouth and by the time the 3rd one came out most people stopped caring

that said, i liked the game at the time, it had really good production values, the character were engaging and it even had that silly shit JRPG used to have like a completly pointless card minigame

First game: Xenogears creators made it. Fans liked it. Brought enough to make it to greatest hits list.
Second game: Namco got cheap and got rid of the creator so they can save a few bucks. Some fucking reason.. bamco decided to make it look more western to appeal to westerners by changing to small eyes for every character instead of animu eyes... despite the fact that the first game sold enough in the west to make it to the greatest hits list. Creator of the series made a big fuss at the time and was mad as fuck. Game sold like shit.
Third game: Namco realized their mistake and sees shitty sales, they brought back the creator of the series. Too late since the shitty 2nd game left such a bad impression that nobody wanted to get the third despite the third game actually being good.

cutscenes were stupidly long though (metal gear solid bad), I guess at the least you could skip them or pause them. First game was pretty meh and second was even worse.
this game was my childhood. I still have the trilogy sitting around somewhere.
it had flaws, but the secomd one held a special place for me (i don't know why when the third one was legitimately better)

Takahashi can't tell his stories without info dumps and longass boring cutscenes. And his stories ain't that good to begin with, Xeno games are the most overhyped shit when it comes to the plots, any old generic western sci-fi is better than anything he did.
Shion is the shittiest MC of all Xeno games even considering how bad Shulk is.
Second game completely shat the bed, even the third and arguably best game in series was unable to change ruined reputation of series.
It's a shittier version of Xenogears.

Probably because it's not gears level story, the gameplay isn't good and it probably the one of the longest set ups to enjoy the story in vidya.
