They were being outsold by the genesis on a 2 to 1 bases (3 to 1 for 2 christmas seasons in a row) in the US and mostly the same in the EU (which is ALL yamauchi cared about) and ONLY started selling great after DKC, which came out 6-9 months before the genesis was forcefully discontinued, and even then it took them almost 2 years AFTER the genesis was off the market and into the next gen before it outsold the genesis.

But that's simply wrong, since you didn't bother to take the Japanese market into account where the Mega Drive got crushed by both the Super Famicom and PC Engine. Also, Nintendo didn't waste a lot of their earned money on a failed add-on like Sega did with their 32X.
Anyway, I can't believe there are still people keeping this ancient console war alive. Both systems plus the underappreciated PC Engine all have fantastic games.
