Was he really that bad to play as? I never really understood the hate for him, and I found it a cool reward for beating the main story to have an entirely new fully voiced character. Red dead thread
>>
>>340347472
It's ultimately not a big deal. Rockstar have to let you be able to stomp around their sandbox even after you finish the story. It's just the only way to achieve that without compromising RDR's great ending is to have you play someone else.

What bugs me is that his voice actor doesn't even try to sound different from his delivery as from before the timeskip. So he looks much older but still sounds 12.
>>
WORK YA DAMN NAG
>>
>>340347939
>>340347472
There's also the fact that he's substantially uglier than John, which coupled with the fact that the VA is trash makes him incredibly difficult to like.
>>
>>340347472
Many just got atached to John.

I didn't mind, actually I thought it was cool Jack could do all available side-missions his dad left and have dialogue for all of them.
>>
>>340347472
It was great to see johns living legacy even if john didnt want it that way. We wanted it that way to kill those motherfuckers
>>
>>340348068
Considering that horses failed him on two occasions(the bear and his father) It makes sense for him not to care as much.
>>340348130
I didn't think he was too ugly, maybe more then john but whatever, I didn't think the voice actor was too bad, especially since jack is supposed to be an emotionless cynic at this point
.>>340348202
It was cool that there was dialogue for doing every possible sidequest as him. Sometimes with their being different if you started it as john and finished it as him.
>>
>>340348130
>he's substantially uglier than John
Huh? John was rough looking son of a gun, not ugly, but you could see how his days on the run took its toll on his appearance.

Jack looks cleaner exactly due because John trying to make his son live a normal life.
>>
Who else here plays John as high honor and jack as low, felt more fitting.
>>
>>340348638
John's rough look was a massive part of his charm.
>>
>>340348824
>felt more fitting.
I don't think so, Jack following into his father's footsteps was already against John's expectations for him, then to go a step further and become a full outlaw is just kick his old man's corpse.

I kept High Honor on both of them.
>>
>>340348417
I didn't. I stopped playing. My daddy dodn't want no outlaw's life for me
>>
>>340349103
Exactly, having Jack go full outlaw helps to make it more tragic, john goes through all this work, but no matter what his son's fate is sealed. Besides Jack shows himself in game to be a depressed cynic, it makes more sense if he is an all out outlaw.

Also I wanted the rewards from both sides.
>>
>>340349245
I killed ross and then ended it. To let that scumbag get away just didn't feel right, sure I may be an outlaw, and that wasn't what john wanted but I felt it was necessary.
>>
i was already in a really bad mood from seeing John die, having him replaced with a prepubescent sounding shitty VA was like kicking me when i was down. That garbage VA was reason enough to hate him.

Because that's exactly what he was before his life got turned around.
>>
I didnt like the ending of the game

It was perfect when he was back with his family, and doing quaint simple tasks with them and connecting with them all over again. It was very emotional to see John tease with his wife, and go hunting with his son. It's like: this is what he's wanted for so long, and he finally got it.

Why did it have to end so depressingly? I don't understand. I don't think the game is any better because of it. I just wanted John to be happy with his family.
>>
He looks awesome in the Reyes rebel outfit. Like a sociopathic gunslinging hippy. I was quite content playing as Jack.

>>340349927
Thats an old western story for you, they are supposed to have those kind of endings. Besides John would one day get bored with it. Did you save the train or stick with the cattle?
>>
>>340348638

John could definitely be described as "ruggedly handsome".
>>
>>340349927
He could never escape his past, just like Dutch, and then neither could the fat fag who killed him.
>>
>>340349927
>Why did it have to end so depressingly?
Becasue the theme was that the Old West was drying and had to go for progress to come through.

Sad as it was John was the very embodiment of the Old West even if he was trying to do good, like his old boss said before dying "They don't need us anymore John."
>>
>>340349927
That was the theme from the beginning, the loss of the wild west.
Besides, the government wasn't just going to let him go. Too much of a liability. John wouldn't have been able to change their minds even if he tried.
>>
>>340350298
They could've just left him in peace and he would've died of old age. Just doing farm work he wasn't hurting anyone.
>>
Does the federal government still kidnap people's families, make them kill their associates, and then kill them anyways?

Seems like a strategy that would be used in the Middle East.
>>
>>340350121
>>340350275
>>340350298

It was just so hard for me because it was one of the few times where I was so excited for the character to finally get what they want. I remember right after Dutch was killed, and John was riding back to his family and that song was playing, it almost brought tears to my eyes because it was such a beautiful moment.

I thought it was amazing how Rockstar actually let us see their family life some. I loved the really small, minor tasks at the end of the game, it felt very "normal" as if that's exactly what they would be doing.
>>
>>340350623

It seriously looked like he was just going to shoot John right there.
>>
>>340350584
The thing is that John was likely not to be able to live like that for too long, trouble follows him and he is quick to answer it with a gun.

Imagine some bandits trying to steal his livestock, John would defintely chase them throughout the land and shoot them down, and probably slaughter their whole gang too; that's not progress.
>>
>>340350746

I don't remember that mission. Was it right near the end? I probably ended up saving the cattle because I don't recall saving a train

In a mission you herd cattle with uncle and in the distance you see a train getting attacked, uncle tells you to just let them go but you have the choice to save the people.
>>
>>340351164
I don't know anyone that left the people to die, but I understand that the point was to show that John Can't escape from his old gun-slinging life.
>>
>>340351114
Seemed like such a pointless choice right? It had a point. John is someone who would never truly integrate into being a farmer. He will one day get bored with it and go back to bounty hunting or whatever.
>>
>>340347472
The big deal is that the story arc shit means you are doomed to fail and can never free the son from the father's 'sins'.

So playing as the kid is 'haha u suck player' forced upon you.

Now I really get how ridiculously genius was the story in RDRedemption. John is the embodiment of Old West, the choice with the train shows us his true nature, his attempt to save his son from mistakes he made fails with seek for redemption. RDR is truly a chill and furious at the same time. GOTY.
>>
I warmed up to Jack eventually.
I still had a lot of stuff to do after the story so we had to get along.
>>
As far as I'm concerned the shitty jack-scapade post game was fully redeemed by Undead Nightmare. Plus the part where you could take a 30th wave co-op horde at Blackwater into an open world lobby and watch the townspeople get slaughtered.

>>
What's cool about RDR is that knowing the ending actually makes it all the more depressing when you get there because the menial tasks with John's family before that mission give the player really depressing dramatic irony; their dialogue makes it seem like they're going to make it out but the player knows that's not the case.

I played this game around release and a couple of months ago decided to revisit it.
Holy shit, I didn't remember the visuals being such arse and the 30fps really hurts it. The gameplay is also garbage with the autoaim.
The early story makes no sense. Why is Marston wasting his time with these worthless scum, especially Irish who keeps betraying him. Then he just grumbles some threats but never goes through with any of it.

I honestly believe RDR is one of the most overrated games of all time. The technical problems would have been remedied if it was on PC but it ain't so..

I actually really like Jack because his role is essential to the ending of the game, which is a very satisfying experience to have.

Jack was someone I would have not minded if he kinda realized the path he was going down and how, even for him, it was all for nothing.

Jack realizes that he will either enact revenge but go down the same path his father did, or let it go and live with the knowledge that the person that ruined his life and killed his dad got off scott free. The choice is obvious between the two.

My brother who does not like games but loves westerns actually stopped playing, I always gave him shit for not finishing it but he always told me that westerns tend to have happy ending, John got his wife, his son and his ranch back and that was that.
I actually envy him for not knowing the real ending.

I think she saw something in John that many didn't, yet selfishness got her as well, as it was obvious that part of her wished that John wouldn't get his wife back. Good, subtle depth to that cast.

Its a combination of the character you've come to really love getting killed. And then being told to immediately play as his son, which the only thing you knew about him previously is he's a stuck up teenager with daddy issues.

He redeems himself by killing his fathers murderers and riding into the sunset. But until that final moment, he just seems like a punk kid who grew up to be a punk adult. Basically, he needed better development. Also, his famous catchphrase was annoying no matter how you feel about him as a character.

I ended up misinterpreting one of the early McFarlane quests and rode a horse all the way to Armadillo. Then, by pure luck, roped the fastest horse in the game, which I kept for the rest of the game. After that, I spent the first 5-10 just doing side quests like hunting and the whole cannibal thing.

I actually had a blast at the beginning. And only realized way later that there was more to do at McFarlane Ranch. Whereas most people seem to get bored at the Ranch missions. But they are optional.
