Alright, been playing for 2 days.
Characters are good, voice acting (dub) is surprisingly better then the Arland series with the exception of Pamela.
Gameplay is nice, although I am confused about the Alchemy puzzle part. Music is fantastic as always. Little weird how there is a time system but no time limit. Not sure how the endings will work here. But whatever.
My biggest disappointment so far is the story. I didn't get far.But the book just coming to life with no memory seems a bit too silly for me.I just wish there was more of a goal/direction then just slice of life alchemy until you stumble across something.

You pretty much got it.
You place something and every adjacent tile gets one bigger. If a tile already has a one on it, then it grows bigger to the next size up.
If you try to overlap a tile with another, then it cancels out the overlapping tile, so try to make it fit for better bonuses.
Place a tile on top to get that bonus number to whatever you're making. Green items add to the green bar, yellow to yellow, etc..
I'm only like an hour in so I don't know if it gets more complicated or if you get extra skills or anything like that. Sorry if I made any mistakes too. Hope the pic helps.

They are light hearted titles that don't rely on the usual save the world JRPG narrative, and instead, focus on character driven slice of life stories (with an over-arcing story mind you), micromanagement with alchemy and item creation, and multitasking quests, scavenging, and battles.
There are so many because they are cheap to make, run on modified engines of one another, and sell well for Gust and KT to make a good profit off them, usually from the usual weeb crowd. The series is actually 20 years old.
