5's succubi try to emulate most of 1's specials, but the sprite isn't really built for it and it shows.
That said, I'll take a flying mage with an actual spellcaster weapon, good aptitudes, and Shame over whatever the fuck N1 was trying to accomplish with spellcaster monsters in Hour of Darkness any day of the week. At least physical monsters were not so hilariously incompetent.

Seems like they've been gradually bringing the pendulum the other way around, to the point where if you're a monster and not a magic-focused one, you look kinda silly. But that's a symptom of how easy it is to get any spell on any character, and monsters not needing to rely on a given weapon to use their specials.

I recall people swearing by Desco and giant monsters in 4. Monster mages are really good in Disgaea D2. In some games monsters are some of the better item world runners. Even as far back as 1 and 2 capturing monsters like Nekos, Wood Golems, and Surts is pretty much the simplest way of breaking the game in half (until they limited capturing in the remakes, I hear). Hell, I smacked the fuck out of the early Etna and Laharl battles in Disgaea 2 with these stupid things because fusion is silly.
If nothing else, they also make really good springboards.
