1 was brimming with potential, it gave me KOTOR vibes and that's always a good thing. The writers cared about the universe and the lore
2 threw most of the RPG elements out the window for cover based shooting. The writing was way worse and there were inconsistencies everywhere. Still, wasn't too bad, if it wasn't compared to 1 I'd have enjoyed it more.

Mass Effect 2 easily had the best written characters and character developments. Legion and Mordin are the 2 best written characters in the entire trilogy (although Legion was ruined in ME3 by turning into pinnochio). While I will agree that ME2 did nothing to advance the story at all, the writing in the game was better than 1, 1 just had a better story.
