It's really not that tragic. He used to co-run Overwtach with Soldier 76 but the public generally liked 76 more so he got jealous and created a schism within the group which caused a mini civil-war and ended up with them both blowing eachother up. Neither of them died, however, but Reaper's cells decay and grow at a rapid rate, meaning he is always decomposing and recomposing if that makes sense.
I feel like this character was made for the express purpose of making fun of people who play him.

Now he exists in a constant state of genetic decay/entropy where he must consume "souls" to survive.

Hanzo and Genji were both part of the Shimada Clan, basically an old ninja clan that became a criminal empire.
Hanzo was the heir apparent, being the older brother, and was raised to take over the Shimada clan.
Genji, being his younger brother and not bearing that responsibility, was spoiled by his father and allowed to have a playboy life. This upset the Shimada clan elders.
When their father passed, the Shimada elders pressured the newly crowned Hanzo to bring his brother in line. Genji refused, and a fight happened. Hanzo NEARLY killed Genji, and believed he did, but the dying Genji was recovered by Overwatch.
Hanzo gave up the sword, left the Shimada, and went to go find peace by the way of the warrior.
Genji got turned into a cyborg by Overwatch. Eventually, after the Omnic Crisis, he joined the Shambali and found peace with being a cyborg.
