I actually played through 3 fes first abd loved it and thought no way 4 would come close. played 4 original and looked all extra content of various versions of both games on youtube. I have not played the answer, seen any anime/movies or played arena/Q/DAN.
Of just the two games, here are the conclusions i came to:
-3 has an all around better story, combat, and overall tobe/feel
-4 has a better cast overall with better interactions between characters which 3 seemed to forget to do
-the vn social parts and fusion parts of the game ate pretty much identical, though i think 4's links are a bit more, just a bit, more involved 'like the naoto link
-dorm with students was more interesting than uncles house
-blue and yellow themes are both good
-i prefered ao controlled party in 3, adding an element of roleplayong he leader but not actually BEING the other membwrs. The combat is scaled for this techinical handicap
-3 had better enemies/bosses like strega ans nyx
-3 had overall better music but not by much
-entering tv is more interesting than going to transformed school
-4 doesnt need marie

I will literally complete a dungeon on a single rainy day or reach the gate in a single night in Tartarus and still won't get shit maxed out in the social links despite save scumming/loading on the emulator I play on. Alright let's talk about P3 and P4 objectively. Persona 3 was an amazing game and mixed RPG elements with a life simulator, one of the first games to have ever done this. Persona 3 has an amazing plot and a few really good characters and moments. The battle system is also really well done borrowing from classic Smt with a twist (wild card). Also the story was really depressing yet hopeful. P4 came out and improved the battle system ten fold. By removing the tired system, creating more than one dungeon, and letting you control an entire party was amazing. Plus P4 made characters feel a lot more interesting than generic anime protagonists. Sadly, I feel P4 never matched the quality and twists in P3's story. But keep in mind, after the depressing story in P3 had P4's happy go lucky mood was a nice touch. Honestly, I hope P5 has a more serious story than P4, but at the same time I hope the characters stay relatable. P5 has a lot of big shoes to fill but I'm excited for it either way. I mean after SmtxFe's failure this is the only game I'm hyped for.

This, but I'd go against the statement of improved combat.
Exhaustion was almost a non-issue with how little it happened after your first few levels, and while I agree direct control is a godsend, O4 removed a lot of nice features from the combat. P4 would have been better off if it kept multiple weapon types, weapon fusion, and fusion spells.Without those, it feels like Persona 4 cut off its foot so it can have a handicap sticker on its car.
