Better VA? More subtle than Hayter maybe, but that just made Snake a giant fish out of water in a cast that's ANYTHING but subtle. The worst part was trying to watch a Japanese play through and hearing Akio Ohtsuka having to hold back to match Sutherland's "subtlety."
Come to think of it, everyone was kind of dialed down or phoned in. The only performance that was consistently good for the duration of the game was Robin Atkin Downes.
Anyone that thinks Sutherland was a good fit for not just Snake, but Metal Gear in general has no idea what made Metal Gear so charming and their judgement on the franchise is suspect.
Metal Gear is dead, and it went out in the past underwhelming way imaginable. I couldn't even bring myself to finish the game, I was so unimpressed with the entire thing, especially the characters and the surprising lack of whimsy and silliness.

I think Kojima is a hack that takes credit for the work of a team of talented developers. That said, I thjnk Keifer did a great job and was a worthy replacement that was underused. Metal Gear Solid V prioritized the english cast though. Akio Ohtsuka's voice was dubbed over Kiefer's for the japanese version.
