I don't think ME3 is a great game, I just think most of the criticism that may justifiably be applied to it are also issues with the the first two games. Because hating 1 and 2 like people hate 3 isn't a meme, this cognitive dissonance is never brought up.
There's three basic ways to look at the series without inconsistencies in evaluation.
1. They all suck, no Mass Effect game is good because it's just sci-fi cliches rehashed with shitty RPG and shooting mechanics.
2. The first is the only good game, 2 and 3 were casualized shit because of the tonal and gameplay changes.
3. They're all good or some form of acceptable because liking 2 and hating 3 should be a diagnostic symptom of Dissociative Identity Disorder.
