I know this is a multiplat, but it's still one of my favourite dreamcast games. Everything about it is charming.

I'll choose Legendia since it's my favourite game.

8/10. Intriguing and unique characters. Story is told well. Pacing is fine. Maybe a little too easy. Battle system could've been implemented better.

I'm interested in Grandia II because I've heard the battle system is good. Is the recent PC version the best version? Does anyone have a good download link?

I've never played this before, but I'm thinking about starting it up quite soon. Is it just your typical JRPG?

>50 hour JRPG
>nothing happens and the gameplay is boring as hell until you're about 25 hours in
I just wish it was about half as long as it is. So much of it is filler.
>>
>>340135274
It's pretty long, but if you have a tolerance to early PS1 JRPGs it's a pretty good game. I can't remember if there's much in the way of sidequests, I think there's a couple optional bosses, and the game has a lot of puzzles.

You're better off playing the ps2 remake Wild Arms Alter Code F

You can skip random battles
>>
>>340134936
Yeah, no reason not to go with the newest version.

It hardly ever goes on sale on Steam, but there's a GoG release so I'm sure there's easy torrents available.

>>340135669
The game is possibly a little disappointing in terms of story depending on how forgiving of the genre you are. It doesn't stick to western with a little magic, it branches out to just about any JRPG theme you can think of.

Did anyone play this? It's a bit hard to get into but once you do, it's great. Simple dungeon crawling and turn-based combat, but with the addition of having a complex character breeding system that lets you develop your own massive family trees. It's really addictive and fun.

>>340134790
I remember having trouble with it. It's much more confusing than most RPGs of the era. Often you'd finish a dungeon and have no idea of what to do next. It doesn't do any handholding in that regard at all. A lot of the time playing is spent exploring the world for some clue as to what to do next, which is a bit tedious in a JRPG with random encounters.

Visually it's pretty awful because of that 3D. Some of the weakest 3D design of the PS1, and that's saying something.

Still, it was a unique game with a great setting, nice characters and story from what I remember. And like the other anon said, the opening is amazing. Still gets me after all these years.

3/5 game.
>>
>>340135894
I played a little of it years ago.

I recall it being awfully grindy.
>>
>>340135692
I'll check this out, thanks.

>>340135794
I don't usually pay much attention to the story since I forget what happens most of the time so thankfully this won't bother me.
>>
>>340135489
The combat actually starts to get kind of good toward the end. It's just that even when the story starts to feel like it's going somewhere, it's not. The narrative stubbornly resists change in the name of continuing the tedium and drudgery of alchemy high school.
>Vayne's dad was famous or something
>But the game refuses to tell you what he did or why
>He went to this one super secret place, and you go there too
>There's nothing there, just a a dumb nigger dragon bossfight
>Isolde is clearly testing Vayne for some reason
>She won't say why and you're left in the dark except for very vague statements at the beginning of each chapter along with a black screen
>Flay is going to graduate which will change the group dynamic
>Nah he flunked, everything is the same for another year
>Sulphur is going to die
>lol never mind he's fine
>Oh shit he's going to die for real this time
>lol just kidding Vayne brings him back to life with his wish magic

Seriously, NOTHING HAPPENS. Also the combat, while entertaining with all the combos and special moves, trudges along because in dungeons you're not actually rewarded for battling. You're given AP, which you can't spend, because you have to make items to unlock the grid, which you can't make unless you have the recipes, which you have to dungeon dive for or buy from shops, which are unlocked chapter to chapter, and AGGGHHH.

Do not recommend.

Could never beat this on the Dreamcast back in the day, had pirated games and the dump for Grandia II was fucked. Kept hanging at a certain point in the game.

Wasnt until a couple of years ago when I was able to beat it via emulation, even then the .CDI I downloaded had that same problem but was fixed by using the second disk. (The file was split into two disks to fit on a 700MB CD-R.)

>>
>>340136156
I dropped that around the third chapter of the first scenario. If I didn't really like the gameplay so far, should I bother with the rest of the game? It's better than previous Shining Force games, but still has slow gameplay, pretty simple mechanics, bland maps, and dumb AI.
>>
>>340136156
One of the best tactical RPGs. The characters and story are amazing. It's a shame the other two parts didn't get a localisation at the time, although there is a fan translation now. It's a shame games like this got confined to the Saturn and so are almost unheard of while inferior games like FFT get all the attention.

I r8: 4/5

>Decent to good story

The only problems I had with it was that the rythm part of the combat was a bit bullshit at times and that you only gained the ability to change the type of battle system (there are like 12 of them) in NG+.

My only gripe with the game is that it's kinda easy iirc and that theres absolutely no endgame. No optional things to do at the end of the game.

Yeah, If you grinned monsters enough, it got pretty easy. And that cancel effect on some of the moves made bosses cake most of the time.

Sure as fuck didn't for destroying the combat system and forcing one homogenized deck across the entire party.

It's really good, but a bit depressing for some reason. For a handheld RPG, it's really big and has loads of shit to do. Just try to stick with it. Also the combat system is awesome in that you can save up turns and use positioning to juggle your enemies around.

Just finished this game and I have to say I was taken by surprise by just how much I enjoyed it.

I initially went in not expecting much and wanted to play simply because apparently there are side quests and other things that you can get in the second game if you play through this first and import your save and I've heard a lot of great things about Suikoden II

despite the generic "you have to liberate the country from the evil empire!" set up I actually got immersed in the world and found myself enjoying the twists and turns with all of the characters

I'm now starting Suikoden II and I'm pretty hype because apparently it's much better

If you liked 1 that much and for those real treat with 2. It's basically the same thing, but better in every way. Better presentation, better characters, better customisation, better story, better world, everything. It's one of the best JRPGs ever.

>>340136674

My only real gripe with II is how much they had you inspect every tile and a half for items. The NPCs did help, even if it was cryptic, but some were just hard to locate. I had a blast with 1 and got everyone to max level with their specialty items. Carrying that over to 2...I did not expect it to be so massive. It had a pretty large cast and I neglected some character so when I had to bring them on the more crucial bits...it was rough but fun. I felt that the bounties and hunter missions were done right in this.

I vaguely remember 3 and ToS was pretty lackluster imo in comparison to 1-3.

You still pretty much just walk up to stuff and hit it. In 2 you have different weapons a character can use each with their strengths and weaknesses. You also still have some magic that can expand its range when leveled enough. There have been moments where bad positioning can screw you but as long as you use your head, it's not all that challenging.

I'd never heard of it but I looked it up and it has some interesting hybrid shooter mechanics with traditional rpg elements gameplay system?

I might check it out sometime thanks anon

>>340140146
Great game. Combat is a bit shit but the world, story and ship customisation save it. If anyone has watched and enjoyed Legend of the Galactic Heroes, they should have this game recommended to them. Unfortunately, if a person wasn't into sci-fi and, specifically, anime sci-fi of the space opera type, that they would probably find this game really dull.

One of my favorite jrpgs on the ps1. Legend of Legaia had a really cool atmosphere, and the combat was incredibly fun. The only two flaws I'd say it suffers from high random encounters and I think it's random when you learn spells from killing enemies.

>>

That's not good enough. One of them only works if you're overlevelled and the other only reduces random battles, there's still plenty of them.

>>
>>340141590
One is useless if you don't fight random battles/grind metal slimes, so it doesn't matter if they stack.

I guess the most efficient way to play the game would be to hang around and hunt metal slimes / liquid metal slimes / etc. whenever they first show up, but then the boss fights would just be a joke. Fortunately the 3ds version will remove random battles.

guys - should i import the chinese/english subbed version of star ocean 5 from playasia or just get my murrikan copy from gamestop/amazon?

reason i ask is because i read a lewdgamer article saying that they censored the pink haired potato girls' panties into granny ones and i abhor censorship BUT im hearing conflicting info - some sources say its been censored just for the international (america) release while others say its too late and all versions have been affected

the thing is, that article was out literal days before the jap release date, and assuming the import version is just a clone of that like how most imports are - should i go with it?

I don't even know if you can call it padding, the game has this weird atmosphere. Instead of focusing on the objective, the game was focused on the long journey to that place.

I've never played this but I fucking love the Soundtrack

I thought it was fantastic, perhaps the best game I don't want to replay. The pacing really doesn't work if you've already played it

SFII is easily the worst game in an already subpar series.

I don't think it's from the port considering the upload date. The Dreamcast version of the game came with a bonus music cd that had that song on it, so it could have come from that if it didn't sound as good in-game. I doubt the original PC port before the Steam version had higher quality music, but maybe it did.

Darn you Bowie!

Even thinking about the dialogue in this abomination of a game makes me mad. If you played this as a child, don't ruin your memories by playing it again.
