How do we fix horror genre?
>>
>>340096260
Stop ripping off Amnesia and PT
>>
>Make it about the horror of the creature/ambiance/situation
>focus on a scary soundtrack overall, not only on high pitches during the jump scare
>dark=/=scary
>new settings that aren't asylum,horror town,zombieland,etc
>more high risk high reward like the early REs making you have to decide if it's wise to fight or run certain situations
>make a good plot that doesn't relay on the police or some scientists being stupid
>>

>>
It always sounded like he was saying "A WHORE" to me.
>>
Terrify, don't horrify.

Horror = showing grizzly scenes. Quickly becomes boring

Terror = letting the player's imagination do all the work
>>
>>340096394

How many PT ripoffs are there?
>>
>>340097424

Horror can work if you have the right kind of protagonist for it, namely one that can't mentally handle the shit they're in. Even if you aren't horrified by the events unfolding, there's a certain thrill in watching other, weaker willed chatacters struggling to cope. Corpse Party in most instances is actually a pretty good example of this.

Play SOMA, it's literally set at the bottom of the ocean. There are sections where you explore pitch black depths with no sunlight.

Also the story is pretty good if you are into existentialism and the definition of being human.

Too much focus on psychological horror thanks to silent hill. We need more gross horror games.
I've always wanted to make a horror game where most of the enemies and bosses are fucked up photoshopped nightmares. (I know /v/ likes to pretend they hate undertale, but flowey is a good example on how to make a fucked up boss. No edgy psychological shit, no emo garbage, just a fucked up evil monster)

Someone should try subtle horror in otherwise normal environments

Dunno, it seems like the current state of horror is what the majority WANTS, rather than our minority desires.

People just don't want to feel actual disgust or fear, they want to have a thriller that they can consider fun at the same time. Can't blame them, since it's a pretty small minority of people that really get enjoyment from body horror and other things like that.

It's almost as if the current market serves the majority, and you guys didn't vote with your wallets on atmospheric horror games yet expected them to survive, huh?

Could we make a driving horror game? I could see a survival horror game about driving cross country during the "mop-up" phase of an alien invasion where they've employed the use of bioengineered alien bloodhounds or terror drones or some shit. Could be semi-open world where you're pretty free to go anywhere but the main and only objective aside from finding food and gas is to get to the last standing city.

The ideal solution would be purely psychological stuff, like Scratches, in which there isn't even a need for a threat to keep the player tense.

However, if you must introduce a threat, death cannot be a simple case of a reload and trying again, because that completely defuses any tension. That's why I think that if you are going to make a horror game with something that can kill you, then death should be permanent.

For example,
>First person survival horror game
>You have a single handgun and ammo is extremely rare, maybe about 20 rounds in total can be found during the entirety of the game
>Gun handling works like it does in Receiver, with every action being manually executed by the player
>This also extends to aiming, which is completely freeform, meaning you can even aim the gun at yourself which brings us to the main gimmick of the game
>If the monster kills you, it's game over and you have to start over from the very beginning
>If you shoot yourself instead, you can continue playing from the last checkpoint you've reached
>The gun can also be used to shoot the creature to cause it to flinch in pain and allowing you time to flee and hide
>Ammo used to kill yourself will not be refunded upon continuing
>>
>>340103010
That sounds fantastic, especially if it has Vive compatibility. Did you steal that idea from anything or did you make it up yourself?

No, you're right anon. Horror games shouldn't be scary. They should be artistic, pretentious, and filled with psychological babble.
Mmhmm.
>>
>>340102863
Samefagging to add on to the idea. A lot of the game would be driving for long stretches with the threat of an ambush at any time. Maybe it could have some sort of radio so the protagonist can interact with someone already at the city who may or may not just be an alien AI attracting survivors to a deathtrap.

You could also get out of the car. On foot gameplay would be like RE4 with less wonky controls and much much less ammo. Protag would also be an average dude, so no roundhouse kicks and shit.

I kind of see it paced like the coast levels from Half Life 2, where you're free to stop at various places to restock on supplies but you might have to deal with some enemies, too.

>Add a bunch of random monsters each time, you won't know what one it is. All have various traits and ways to fuck you over.
>Monsters are invisible until they gain "confidence" and then start fucking with you
>Confidence is gained by tricking and fucking around with shit. Starts small, like leaving a room, coming back, a vase might be moved a meter to the left, or a book in a bookshelf turned upside down. Not noticing these things and putting them back, grants confidence to monster.
>As confidence grows, more shit can be done. The typical door slam, objects blatently turning on/off, moving while you watch it happen, etc. The "entry level" spooky shit that most horror games try to use to pad out the real horror.
>Suddenly the monsters form takes shape. Whatever its abilities are manifest, because it has gained too much confidence. They all have different ways to kill you.
>Think of this like Slender where collecting pages powers them up, only not noticing them and letting them scare you powers them up + they power up slowly over time in case you're good at stopping their shit.
> Monsters come after you in a variety of ways. Maybe big blind monster like Berserker from Gears of War begins to wander around, now corporeal - avoid by not making noise, but it can tell when you're looking at it if you look too long.
>Maybe Mirror/Reflection/Painting/Television monster only appears in aforementioned items and gains power by stealing yours as you look at it. More and more objects become "infected" and it wins by stealing your form and trapping you.
>The standard RE4 "regenerator type" monster that wanders around looking for you, akin to your standard horror game villain...like Alien Isolation type shit.
>Dolls. Fuck dolls.

Just please, no jumpscare scripted shit..linear and horrible

Don't rely on jumpscares. They're cheap. Build tension and fear through unsettling events and leave the player hanging.

Music and ambience are pretty much vital.

Interactive fuckery. Games are an interactive medium, and anyone can just pause and walk away when they feel like needing a breather. Don't give the player that chance. Disable the pause button, allow them to the menus but fuck with stuff (maybe having interacting with menus continue to have the game in the backround even though it never did before. Constantly change the gameplay. Give them some element thats vital and force them to rely on it for a while before taking it away and throwing everything you have at them.

Honestly though, horror isn't the best genre for a medium like gaming

I agree with this. The problem with games is they are always designed to be winnable. No matter how scary/demented/eldritch/fucked up the thing around the corner is, who cares? You have a shotgun and full health. It's about to get fucked up no matter how sp00ky it is.

I do disagree with you though on jump scares. You can't have a scary game/movie with just some ominous violin music in the background. Suspense is only scary when you are actually anticipating something, i.e., a jumpscare.

Cry of Fear did it well. The casual kiddies on this board keep recommending Silent Hill and some walking simulators, but Cry of Fear is the only game that I've played as an adult which I would say is scary, and I only say that because the game doesn't hesitate to jump-scare the fuck out of you.

arkham asylum has some pretty underrated horror vibes, and not just scarecrow

You are everything wrong with horror. Not everything needs a god damn violin screech to notify a player that they're scared. Jump scares have their place. It simply shouldn't be the sole means for horror.

1. Stop relying on jump scares

2. Stop relying on gore

3. Stop forcing me to run away or hide from everything that's a threat. You're not making me scared, you're tell me to be scared.

The concept was that the player was in some kind of gigantic abandoned mall. /v/ couldn't quite agree on the circumstances of the mall itself, whether it was a planetoid mall (literally a small planet that is just a gigantic mall that's been abandoned by its ultra-capitalist creators) or that it just be some unexplained immense construct itself.

Try to imagine a game like Dead Rising 1/2 but subtract zombies with a plethora of other spooky shit. You'd have to scavenge for things to stay alive while avoiding hostile elements, the eventual goal being your escape from wherever you are. There were ideas like the voice over the intercom telling you when the mall was officially open or closed and you didn't want to be caught wandering the halls when it was closed. Stores would randomly open or close each day, some empty and some not, some peddling otherworldly and disturbing products, some stores not even being there last you checked. If you tried to break into a store or if you stole something, the intercom would alert "security" and you'd have to hide from whatever abomination began hunting for you.

I was particularly fond of the planetoid concept. It laid out the ground work for the player maybe discovering just why it was abandoned, why it was built and opened up possibilities that are more satisfying to discover than just an unexplained and empty facility.

I also liked the idea borrowed from Dead Rising, where you saved your game in the bathrooms.

I've got an idea for that
A huge corn field where something chases you. You just never find out what it is until it catches you.
You never see any kind of way out, no buildings, no end, nothing
Only a blue sky, warm sun and corn.
And the sounds of the unknown coming for you.
Special focus on sound design

The monster isyour mom lmao

>No matter how scary/demented/eldritch/fucked up the thing around the corner is, who cares? You have a shotgun and full health. It's about to get fucked up no matter how sp00ky it is.
But what if the goal of the game was to slowly realize you can't win and at the end you get two choices. Watch the eldritch abomination come in and kill you, or shoot yourself
