I sadly didn't play many, but I loved Legacy of Goku 1 and Budokai 1. Spent way too many hours on Budokai 1 trying to get all the dragonballs and shit.

The Budokai Tenkaichi games for certain.
I remember back when I was a kid and the first game came out me and my friends would have tournaments and shit like that. We took turns trying to beat Bojack in story mode because he was fucking ridiculous in that game if I remember it right. Every now and then someone will bring over a ps2 and we'll play Tenkaichi 2 or 3 but man, shit was hype when it first came out.
Favourite to play is probably Tenkaichi 3 or Xenoverse, though Dokkan Battle is pretty fun for a mobile game.
Favourite idea is the DB Heroes MUGEN because it takes all the craziness of Heroes and tries to make an actual fighting game out of it, not some kind of weird turn-based card battle.
Only thing stopping it from being my favourite to play is that of all those crazy new characters, most are either unfinished or stupidly overpowered/badly designed (yeah, Kid Goku turning into a Grape Ape was a great moment in the series; we don't need to see a short movie of it happening every time he does it in-game, especially when he spams the fucking thing).

If you're here:
If you've just started, don't bother with the tournaments. Those are better done once you've got a full multi-type team of SSR/UR cards since the amount of points you gain is based on the team cost of your opponents, and you're matched with opponents with a similar team cost to you.
This means that until you get an SSR/UR team, you'll be earning shit all compared to people with such teams putting you at a major disadvantage.
Start by clearing all the story on all difficulties (or as far as you can) to save up the dragon stones. In a month or so will be global's first anniversary, meaning Gogeta and Janemba will be making their debut and they are amazing (Gogeta is still the best general-purpose leader in Japan).
To get decent cards to hold you over until then, do events for characters. The strike event characters are easy enough to obtain and you can even farm SR Android 13 in the story mode along with the medals to awaken him into SSR Fusion Android 13, giving you a solid TEQ type for your team.
If you really want to do a summon before the anniversary, I recommend doing the 30-stone discount and nothing more.

Agi Beerus is right when I rejoined Dokkan after a long break.
I didnt really understand how it worked so I just kinda assumed I had zero chance of getting it with a fresh team and didnt really even try.
Luckily I do have that crappy TEQ Beerus that will Dokkan awaken to something better in the future so Im not totally Beerus-less.

Having high stamina is helpful, but it's mostly stones. Once you hit around 110~120 max stamina, you can get the 80 wins purely on the stones you earn from the tournament.

While you get ton of stones, unless you have 180 stamina (good luck with that) youll still lose more stones than youll gain.

STR Beerus is great. Dat fucking passive procs so much and it practically turns his normal attacks into mini-supers. He gets a Dokkan Awakening later (Japan only just got it so we've got a 4+ month wait for it) that makes it even better too. Higher rate to proc and +200% attack instead of +150%.
AGL SS Goku not so great, but he at least can be Dokkan Awakened using medals from the current Heroes vs Villains event (villain route).
