They're definitely more refined than Awakening in mechanics, it's just a matter of putting up with the plot, writing, and level design which is really hit and miss.

Birthright and Revelations should only be played if your a completionist or if you really liked Awakening
I liked it.
Compared to Awakening? The combat system has great improvements and maps are better. Story-wise, it all depends on if you liked Awakening's or not and which one you play. I think Birthright has the best story while Conquest has the weakest. Meanwhile Conquest has a better challenge. However, the one thing that I found overall the worst was how children were shoehorned into the plot. I may like that feature, but it can't be defended, whereas in Awakening it was already part of the plot.

But seriously though, the gameplay is a massive improvement, especially Conquest. Just don't expect to like the story or some of the characters.
Conquest is legitimately one of the best games in the series for gameplay. You could probably make a reasonable argument that it's the best, though it still has the usual IS inability to properly balance magic and physical damage.
Birthright is like a better version of Awakening, though it's still easy.
Revelation is for when you want to grind all the units at once and buy all the things. It's got the worst story of them all and is so poorly balanced you'd think they forgot to test it. Maps can be okay but are the most gimmick-heavy.
Whatever route you choose, you will quickly grow tired of visiting your room even without having to pet people to make them talk.

I honestly don't like the Bow Knight class because all their skills are supportive, but their weapon types are mainly offensive. Also, dropping your thief on a horse gives them an unnecessary weakness. I prefer the Mechanist.
Gameplay-wise they take Awakening's ambitious clusterfuck of mechanics and pare and refine it into the best gameplay the series has ever seen. Conquest is the obvious standout but the other two have their highlights, especially Revelations' batshit crazy gimmicks.
Music-wise, it retains Awakening's strong instrumentation but doesn't really have the same arsenal of strong leitmotifs. Still, Japanese winds and percussion along with Irish fiddles and the like still make it a contender for best FE soundtrack.
Character-wise, a lot of the cast is built from the same basic blueprint as the Awakening cast, sometimes literally, but retain enough differentiation that their supports go into different material. Honestly my only issue here is they don't really seem as vibrant as Awakening's sometimes, and a lot of the support convos feel awfully dry, though that may just be them pulling too much from the Japanese script.
Storywise it's contentious, you've got another Robin and a Lucina in Corrin and Azura, but without a Chrom(which is the role the eldest princes should have been playing in their respective versions) the story often meanders without purpose, but Birthright is pretty much your usual FE story and doesn't really suffer from the same multitude of issues and questionable decisions.
Still, all in all another fantastic evolution for the series.

Even though the whole dialog in between chapter 6 and 7 was pants on head retarded atleast chapter 8 showed promise of Kamui trying to change Nohr from within. But after that they do jack shit in terms of changing anything. There's such a stark contrast between Kamui of chapter 8 and Kamui of chapter 11 and onwards that I wouldn't be surprised if somebody else continued writing it. Why does Kamui let Hans commit atrocities on THEIR campaign? Why does Kamui go back on their word of changing Nohr to letting the King do whatever he wants after Aqua reveals how to show Garon's true form? Why are your siblings so fucking stupid? They claim they love Kamui but will let the likes of Iago threaten to kill them? In Birthright, Leo even immediately killed Iago upon sight for dishonoring Nohr. Fuck this story

I think half of it is just a rushed localization.
Last time they were sure they were really building on everything, even when they were fundamentally altering characters(e.g. Henry, Gregor).
So get to Fates, when I find a decently sized support, I can still see a lot of that same spark, especially if the characters start talking about their past or their dreams or whatever.
But too often they exchange like five lines, "Character A and Character B achieved Support Rank B" etc.
