Are there any space combat sims that have a distinct "volatile junkyard" aesthetic? What I mean is that the ships are old and used rust buckets and the pilots are daredevils. Shit's naturally dangerous out there, hyperspace is risky tech, and everything is far from "high tech", kind of the opposite of what Elite Dangerous is pulling.

Man I know what you want OP and I can't agree more.
There's nothing exciting in Elite, even the combat gets dull after a while. There's literally nothing dangerous out there that can fuck up the player, hell you can even fly through black holes and suffer nothing save for funny visuals.

Rebel Galaxy I guess. It has this western/Rebel theme to the game but its not a simulator per say, more like a action game with rpg elements (armor, weapons, ships) etc etc.
Its pretty neat, playing it currently.
